More than half a million public school students from the class of 2010 scored a 3 or higher on at least one AP® Exam during high school, nearly double the number of successful students from the class of 2001, and exceeding the total number of students from the class of 2001 who took AP Exams (see Figure 1). As research consistently shows that students who score a 3 or higher on AP Exams typically experience stronger college outcomes than otherwise comparable non-AP peers, the data in this year’s report show how educators are enhancing the college readiness of our nation’s students by preparing them to take AP classes and succeed on AP Exams.

Millions of young people across the nation will become scientists for the day tomorrow, during the fifth annual 4-H National Youth Science Day (NYSD). This annual event seeks to spark an early youth interest in science education and future careers, and to reclaim the nation’s position of leadership in scientific exploration. As part of 4-H NYSD, youth will participate in the 4-H Eco-Bot Challenge: the 2012 National Science Experiment at hundreds of local events taking place in all 50 states. There was much more to watch and celebrate yesterday than the big game. Thousands of football-themed costumed pets and their owners took to the streets of the Soulard neighborhood in St. Louis Sunday, Feb. 3 to join the huge tail gate party and march in the 20th annual Beggin’® Pet Parade.
Annually attracting more than 8,000 pets and 80,000 people, the Beggin’ Pet Parade is one of the largest pet parades in the world. The parade holds the Guinness World Records™ for “Most Dogs in Costumed Attire,” achieved during the 2012 parade.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the RUBE GOLDBERG MACHINE CONTEST® during the 2018 season. The contest, which started in 1988 with a handful of university engineering undergraduates, now includes divisions for elementary, middle, high school and college students with thousands of participants nationwide. As part of an ongoing commitment to support life sciences innovators and the development of integrated, cross-sector solutions to prevent, intercept and cure diseases, Johnson & Johnson today named cell biologist Yoshinori Ohsumi, Ph.D., of the Tokyo Institute of Technology the winner of the 2016 Dr. Paul Janssen Award for Biomedical Research for his pioneering discoveries concerning the molecular basis of autophagy.

Two Merck research scientists, Nancy A. Thornberry and Ann E. Weber, Ph.D., will receive the Discoverers Award, the highest honor from the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA), during a ceremony tonight at the Liberty Science Center in Jersey City, N.J.
They will be recognized for their leadership in the discovery of JANUVIA®, a once-daily pill that helps patients with type 2 diabetes control glucose in conjunction with diet and exercise.
