St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is launching a new series of public service announcements (PSAs) to help raise awareness and deepen the understanding of the hospital’s lifesaving mission through real St. Jude heroes – its patients and families. St. Jude has not produced national PSAs since 2003 and timed this new multichannel campaign to coincide with the hospital’s 50th anniversary.
The PSAs share St. Jude moments through patients and families like 10-year-old Angiel. Angiel and her mom Damaris were planning a trip to Africa for a family reunion when she was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a type of bone cancer that produced tumors in both of Angiel’s legs. Today, thanks to St. Jude doctors, Angiel can still look forward to visiting family in a foreign land one day. Angiel’s story is just one of several patients featured in the PSAs.

Abbott has selected 40 undergraduate and graduate students living with cystic fibrosis (CF) to each receive a $2,500 CFCareForward Scholarship for use during the 2012-2013 academic year. Recipients were chosen based on their impressive academic merits, community involvement and creativity, and will now compete for two additional scholarships for a total award of $20,000 each – in honor of the 20th anniversary of the program. Natural disasters that have devastated the nation this year have reminded Americans about the importance of preparedness. That was the focus of the Ad Council and FEMA’s Ready campaign created pro bono by Chicago-based advertising agency Leo Burnett. The innovative campaign earned Leo Burnett the Ad Council’s top creative award of the year – the Gold Bell for Creative Excellence. Marc Pritchard, Global Branding Officer of The Proctor and Gamble Company and Ad Council Chairman of the Board, presented the award last night at the Ad Council’s 59th Annual Public Service Award Dinner. Silver and Bronze Bells were also awarded to Havas Worldwide New York and Grey New York for their work on the Unplanned Pregnancy Prevention and Stroke Awareness campaigns, respectively.

Littered cigarette butts are more than just an eye sore. According to environmental clean-up reports, cigarette butts are the No. 1 littered item on U.S. roadways and the No. 1 item found on beaches and waterways worldwide. A new survey conducted by Legacy, shows that while more than 88 percent of Americans surveyed think that cigarette butts are an environmental concern, more than 44 percent of those polled who had ever smoked admit to having dropped a cigarette on the ground and nearly 32 percent have dropped a cigarette out of a car window.

A recent Harris Interactive survey on the attitudes of the American public towards healthcare acquired infections (HAIs) revealed that almost one quarter (24%) of U.S. adults or someone they know have had an infection as a result of a stay in a hospital; and that 37% are most concerned about the spread of germs and bacteria in hospitals, as compared to other public places.
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC), nearly 2 million people acquire infections while in U.S. hospitals each year; and almost 100,000 die as a result.

Illinois State Treasurer Dan Rutherford today announced that the state’s Cash Dash unclaimed property program has a new name, I-Cash, and has added 780,000 new names to the public web database. The Illinois State Treasurer’s Office is making this effort to connect even more Illinois residents with their cash and assets.
I-Cash, part of the Illinois State Treasurer’s Unclaimed Property Division, connects state residents with their unclaimed property. The program was established in 1999 with the goal of helping Illinois residents through the process of reclaiming money or assets. It’s common for people to lose track of their assets when they move or when loved ones pass away, and businesses and banks are required to turn over unclaimed accounts to the treasurer’s office.
