The IV Eurasian Higher Education Leaders Forum (EHELF) took place at Nazarbayev University, Astana, Kazakhstan, June 10-12. Each year, more than 300 attendees, industry leaders, from different parts of the world participate in discussions and panel sessions at EHELF.
The theme of this year’s Forum was “Graduate Employability in the 21st Century: key competencies and modern labor market.” “Nazarbayev University took the initiative and created EHELF, a platform for discussing pressing issues in higher education in Kazakhstan as well as globally. Our Steering Committee researches and chooses the most relevant topics for the Forum each year. The topic of EHELF-2015, employability of graduates, employment and labor market, is relevant for us,” - says Shigeo Katsu, the President of Nazarbayev University. “Nazarbayev University is a unique university established in partnerships with some of the world’s best universities. And this year, we are graduating our first cohort of 446 undergraduate and graduate students. A level IV trauma center in Washington State has installed copper components throughout its facility as another way of reducing hospital-acquired infections and keeping their patients safe.
Pullman Regional Hospital has become an early adopter of antimicrobial copper after studies found that the age-old metal could continuously kill deadly bacteria.
Each year, 2 million people in the United States are diagnosed with a hospital-acquired infection and nearly 100,000 people die. These infections are caused by common bacteria such as E. coli, MRSA, C. diff, CRE and VRE.
“It is a very serious problem,” said Ed Harrich, the director of surgical services for Pullman Regional Hospital. “I think every hospital across the nation is doing everything they can to try to deal with it the best that they can. But there’s bioburden on everything and people aren’t good at hand washing and there’s cross-contamination everywhere you go.”

Researchers at global public health organization NSF International, Harvard Medical School, the United States Department of Defense and the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment in the Netherlands (RIVM) recently identified four unapproved, DMAA-like stimulants in six over-the-counter weight-loss and pre-workout products currently available online. The research was published in the peer-reviewed journal Clinical Toxicology.
The potentially harmful compounds – including banned stimulants 1,3-DMAA and 1,3-DMBA as well as octodrine and a newly identified DMAA analog – were not listed as ingredients in the products and may have been disguised as “2-aminoisoheptane” or extract of Aconitum kusnezoffii. These stimulants may cause adverse cardiac events, hemorrhagic strokes or sudden death, especially if taken prior to strenuous exercise or combined with caffeine. Extreme heat and dehydration may also increase the health risks.

Even though the big holidays usually get the spotlight, there are many everyday moments big or small worth celebrating throughout the fall and winter months. This is why the National Pork Board (NPB) today launched the “Sabrosos Momentos” campaign aimed at celebrating those joyous every day, and sometimes humorous, moments of the season. To bring these moments to life, the NPB has partnered with three of the most recognizable social media celebrities and digital talents in the country today: LeJuan James, Los Pichy Boys and David Lopez.
The celebrity influencers will capture their own pork-centric “Sabrosos Momentos” with a comical and unique Latino twist. The first video by the Cuban duo “Los Pichy Boys” will zero in on the cast of characters that make up a typical Latino family at any get-together. In November, LeJuan James will release a video that centers on how he welcomes unexpected guests; and in December, David Lopez’s video will highlight a humorous interpretation of how Latinos combine new and old traditions.
