It’s the summer of 1973, and eight year-old Bobby Burke’s father has been MIA in Vietnam for three years. He’s been keeping his father alive through the magic of his SafeKeeper, a charm bracelet he wears on his wrist, but it seems lately that the SafeKeeper’s power has been fading. The military has given up hope of finding his father alive, and even Bobby’s mom has taken up with a new guy, Nick, who seems determined to become a new father to him. A system called Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children is supposed to make things easier by standardizing attachment hardware, but a new study shows that many automakers aren’t paying attention to the key factors that make LATCH work. Only 21 of the 98 top-selling 2010-11 model passenger vehicles evaluated have LATCH designs that are easy to use. This is the main finding of joint research conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI).

A study commissioned by dating giant Anastasia International has found that Romance Tours attended by western men in hopes of finding a bride in Russia and CIS are highly effective. Organized Romance Tours take men from behind their computers on excursions through Russia and Ukraine with the object of connecting them with ladies in search of amour and possibly marriage. The Public Relations Department at Anastasia interviewed 1,697 Western clients who had attended at least one of her Romance Tours between 2002 and 2009, and discovered a significant percentage not only found a lasting relationship, but an enduring marriage.

Coty Inc., a leading global beauty company, has announced a partnership agreement with the National Geographic Society, identifying Davidoff Cool Water as a partner for the Pristine Seas program.
The ocean covers 72% of the surface of the Earth, but only 1% is protected. National Geographic, through the Pristine Seas Expeditions, seeks to protect some of the last pristine spots of the oceans and to create marine protected areas. The partnership kicks off with an expedition to the Pitcairn Islands (UK territory) in the Pacific Ocean. Dr. Enric Sala, a marine ecologist and National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence who has dedicated his career to finding ways to mitigate human impacts on marine life, will lead the expedition.

Over the past six months UK small-to-medium-sized businesses (SMBs) have grown on average by six per cent despite the broader UK economy struggling, according to the latest SMB Index from HP.
HP’s survey of 1,000 SMBs, with between 1 and 50 employees shows that, compared to that of the previous six months, growth for UK SMBs has slowed slightly but optimism is still strong, with SMBs expecting to grow by up to 13 per cent over the next year. Optimism in the economy is also strong, with 66 per cent of SMBs optimistic about the year ahead. SMBs in Financial Services have grown the most (13 per cent), followed by Manufacturing (10 per cent). SMBs in Retail (4 per cent) and Professional Services (1 per cent) have seen the least growth. Nearly half of UK SMBs (48 per cent) are turning to social media to help grow their business and reach new audiences, with 56 per cent of sole traders recognising its value the most. However, although SMBs are finding social media beneficial for networking purposes (83 per cent), and as a mechanism for advertising (57 per cent), many SMBs are underestimating its true potential for business growth and lead generation.

Employers expect to increase hiring for professional-level positions in the first quarter, but they have concerns about finding qualified candidates for these roles, a new Robert Half survey shows. A net 10 percent of executives interviewed for the Robert Half Professional Employment Report plan to add full-time staff in the first three months of the year, up three points from the fourth-quarter forecast. However, the number of respondents who report recruiting challenges also is on the rise: 67 percent of executives said it is at least somewhat challenging to find skilled employees today, up from 59 percent last quarter and 42 percent in the third quarter.
