Based on data provided by the California Solar Initiative (CSI), sales of new production homes with rooftop solar power systems nearly doubled from 2011 to 2012, signaling increasing home buyer demand to control monthly electricity costs using clean, renewable solar power.
An estimated 4,000 new production solar homes were built in California last year, ten times the number built just seven years ago during the housing construction boom. SunPower estimates that strong growth in the sector will continue, with more than 20 percent of new production homes being solar powered this year.

The National Meningitis Association (NMA) today announced the launch of a new educational initiative in collaboration with Sanofi Pasteur, the vaccines division of Sanofi, about the importance of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC’s) recommended second dose of the meningococcal meningitis vaccine (MenACWY) for adolescents at age 16. The 16 Vaccine (The16Vaccine.org) aims to educate parents about the importance of this critical second dose of MenACWY, which helps protect teens against meningococcal meningitis during the period when they are at increased risk.

Where might be the perfect place to introduce Tecnu Bites & Stings, an aptly named new over-the-counter product for stings and insect bites? How about the Great Texas Mosquito Festival in Clute, Texas? For 36 years, thousands of people have gathered at the yearly celebration along the gulf coast of Texas; a place known for thirsty mosquitoes, biting ants and other persnickety pests.
To the group at Tec Labs it sounded like the perfect place to get credible feedback on their innovative new product. So they hired a professional camera crew, grabbed some cases of Tecnu Bites & Stings and left the humidity-free confines of Oregon and headed to the land of cowgirls and Texas tea.
As the camera rolled, the video crew got some wonderful feedback from a great mix of people. The goal was to get honest and straightforward reactions and that’s exactly what occurred. Als die Ingolstädter 1994 mit der zweiten Generation erstmals in der Großserie die selbsttragende Aluminiumkarosserie einführten, mokierte sich teilweise der Wettbewerb – das ginge gar nicht, das sei viel zu teuer und nach Unfällen würden die Reparaturkosten immens sein. Nun man irrte sich. Nach anfänglichen Akzeptanz-Schwierigkeiten mauserte sich das Audi-Flaggschiff zum Erfolgsmodell. Die jetzt gründlich überarbeitete vierte Generation, die im November beim Händler steht, soll dies möglichst noch toppen. Der Einstiegspreis beträgt 75.400 Euro. Mit 5,14 Meter Länge, 2,99 Meter Radstand, 1,95 Meter Breite und 1,46 Meter Höhe ist der A8 in seinen Abmessungen gleich geblieben; beim A8 L kommen in Radstand und Länge je 13 Zentimeter dazu. Beibehalten wurde natürlich auch der Leichtbau. Die Karosserie besteht nahezu komplett aus Aluminium und wiegt – in der Audi Space Frame-Bauweise konzipiert – lediglich 231 Kilo und auch das Gesamtgewicht des A8 3.0 TFSI stellt mit 1.830 Kilo einen Bestwert unter den Wettbewerbern mit Allradantrieb dar. Darüber hinaus gibt es noch zahlreiche optionale Assistenzsysteme, die das Fahren im A8 noch souveräner machen. Die adaptive cruise control mit Stop&Go-Funktion ist mit einer Ausbaustufe des serienmäßigen Sicherheitssystems Audi pre sense basic gekoppelt, das Gleiche gilt für den Audi side assist. Neu im A8 sind der Audi active lane assist, der die Lenkungsrichtung gegebenenfalls leicht korrigiert, und der Parkassistent mit Umgebungsanzeige, der die Lenkarbeit beim Parken übernimmt. Das ebenfalls neue Head-up-Display projiziert wichtige Informationen im Sichtbereich des Fahrers auf die Windschutzscheibe und der Nachtsichtassistent kann neben Fußgängern jetzt auch größere Wildtiere erkennen.Da bleiben also kaum noch Wünsche offen – allerdings bewegt man sich dann in Preis-Regionen von weit über 100.000 Euro. Muss man ja nicht alles haben. Für die Ingolstädter ist ein derartiges Angebot aber wichtig, um die Ansprüche betuchter Käufer zum Beispiel im Nahen Osten oder in China erfüllen zu können.
A new survey from the Gout & Uric Acid Education Society (GUAES) finds many Americans with gout may be placing too much emphasis on diet when it comes to managing the disease and controlling painful flares. Of all the steps taken to manage gout, respondents cited changing their diet by eliminating or reducing consumption of certain foods as their top step taken (50 percent)—even ahead of taking medications to lower their uric acid levels (40 percent) and maintaining an overall healthy fitness level (33 percent). Furthermore, nearly one in three with gout incorrectly believes that the disease can be completely avoided by eliminating certain foods; and more than one in four said they would not take medications if they were making dietary changes.
“Physicians all too often see patients who believe they can successfully manage their gout with diet alone,” said N. Lawrence Edwards, M.D., a rheumatologist and GUAES chairman. “But even with extremely rigid diet restrictions, most gout patients will only be able to lower their uric acid levels slightly—not nearly enough to achieve a healthy level to control flares and reduce risk for long-term damage.”
