Easter Seals, one of the country’s leading providers of child development services, introduces a new video with a cast of animated characters to help parents understand the importance of monitoring their child’s development. Make the First Five Count (makethefirstfivecount.org) is a movement to ensure all children are entering kindergarten with the right skills to succeed alongside their peers. “Easter Seals is dedicated to ensuring all children have every opportunity to reach their full potential,” said Katy Beh Neas, Easter Seals’ Executive Vice President of Government Relations. “We’ve created this new video to help parents learn the basics of child development. At the new website, parents can find a screening tool and other information designed to support the well-being of children. Monitoring development should be treated as a common part of our annual routines, like spring cleaning or a trip to the dentist.” To view the Multimedia News Release, go to http://www.multivu.com/players/English/7172751-easter-seals-make-the-first-five-count/

There’s a dance that goes on between mothers and their newborns: the initiation of relationship and communication. However, current culturally driven health and child care practices are interrupting the dance and causing more harm than good. As a result, parents, especially first time parents, often require a great deal of education and support. Dr. Barbara Morrison (DrBarb) is a certified nurse midwife dedicated to advocating, educating and inspiring healthcare reform for newborns and their families. As the founder and CEO of DrBarbCNM, LLC (http://www.DrBarbCNM.com), DrBarb is among the leading advocates of Kangaroo Care, the method of holding a newborn or infant skin-to skin, chest-to-chest to strengthen the bond between parent and child and to encourage breastfeeding and mental, social and physical development. In support of American Diabetes Month®, Colgate Total® is working with the American Diabetes Association to educate patients about diabetes and gum disease and to empower them to help take charge of their diabetes. A recent survey conducted by Harris Interactive on behalf of Colgate Total® about oral health reveals a lack of awareness about the various health issues associated with diabetes. More than one third of all respondents (36%) are not aware of the link between diabetes and oral health and are less likely to associate oral health issues with diabetes than almost all other health conditions related to diabetes. More than half (54%) report one or more symptoms of gum disease – yet 67% do not discuss their oral health with their doctor. The thinking that diet does not affect acne is a falsehood perpetuated by that part of the medical industry that is trying to protect their livelihood of dispensing drugs. The AMA has established that the only way to deal with acne is through the use of medication. They say there is no evidence to support the idea that diet causes acne.

A recent study found that only 47% of Americans are currently taking steps to prevent bone loss1, despite considering it to be of high importance. In an effort to educate the public about the importance of bone health, Sunsweet Growers has partnered with the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) to support their annual World Osteoporosis Day (WOD) campaign. WOD is globally celebrated on October 20 and serves to create awareness for bone health and the steps that can be taken to protect bones including incorporating bone-building habits – like eating prunes – into a regular lifestyle routine. Bones need the right nutrients to stay strong and healthy and research suggests that eating just 5-6 prunes (the Feel Good Fruit!) each day may help to prevent bone loss. However, many do not think about bone health until after a fracture or break occurs.
