As most high school and college students are busy tackling tests or taking it easy during spring break, student teams from across the Americas are preparing for the ultimate extracurricular activity – designing, building, and testing a vehicle that travels the farthest distance using the least amount of energy. After months of coordinating designs and constructing vehicles, 43 student teams – among 9 high schools and 29 universities – are putting the finishing touches on their vehicles for the 2010 Shell Eco-marathon Americas energy challenge. These leaders of tomorrow, and their fuel-efficient creations, will soon take to the streets of downtown Houston, March 26-28 around Discovery Green Park. We’ll find out if these students can beat the 2,757.1 miles per gallon (1,172.2 kilometers per liter) achieved in 2009 by Laval University, but more than that, the students will grant us a glimpse into the fuels, technologies and transportation of tomorrow.

9000 kilometres across some really rough terrain – that’s the challenge facing the rally drivers taking part in the “Dakar Rally” in January. Two weeks of stress and strain. The head of motor racing in charge of the teams is under enormous pressure too, but in his case it’s not confined to that single fortnight. All year long he has to put together a car drawing on a given budget; a car that will pose a genuine threat to the competition. At the same time he must organise and supervise: the safety of the entire team, the fitness of the drivers and co-drivers, the transportation of the equipment, and so on and so forth. The CCCL Austellungsmannschaft (Luzern's chef's guild competition cooking team) led by Chef Leonard recently completed their 4th team test cook in preparation for the IGEHO exhibition in Basel in November, only 1 more test cook remains in order to correct the dishes so that finished items look perfect. To assist the team in their cause to achieve this perfection 2 of the Swiss Cooking associations top judges (Franz Jonke and Werner Schumacher) were invited to critique the dishes which will be on display on the 25th November, their expertise and assistance will allow the team progress to the next level and hopefully aid our cause to achieve some medal status at the competition itself.
