The National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) today warned drivers in the Las Vegas area to be on the lookout for criminals targeting trucks in a deliberate attempt to cause an accident for the purpose of collecting insurance money.
As many as 100 suspected staged accidents along the I-15 corridor through the metropolitan Las Vegas area have been reported to NICB in the past 12-18 months and as many as 25 of those accidents targeted big rig trucks. The NICB is working closely with its member companies, the Nevada Insurance Council, the Nevada Highway Patrol, and the Nevada Attorney General’s Office to track down the organizers behind these schemes.

A group of moderately priced midsize cars outperformed most of their luxury counterparts in a challenging new frontal crash test conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) on 2013 models. Of the 18 midsize family cars evaluated in the small overlap test, two earn the top rating of good, 11 earn acceptable, three earn marginal, and two are poor.
In contrast, just 3 of 11 midsize luxury and near-luxury cars evaluated in the inaugural round of small overlap tests earned good or acceptable ratings. Midsize moderately priced cars are the second group to be tested. The best performers in this group are the Honda Accord 4-door and Suzuki Kizashi. Both earn a good rating.

Mit dem neuen Rapid Sportback, der im Oktober bei den Händlern steht, haben die Skoda-Anhänger noch mehr die Qual der Wahl, für welches Kompakt-Modell des tschechischen Herstellers sie sich entscheiden sollen. Vor allem diejenigen, die bereits den ebenfalls ja erst seit knapp einem Jahr erhältlichen Rapid gegenüber dem länger gewordenen Octavia favorisierten. Denn sie haben jetzt die Wahl zwischen der klassischen Stufenheck-Limousine und der Kurzheck-Form. Das ist vor allem eine Sache des Geschmacks und der persönlichen Vorliebe. Denn wenn auch der Spaceback mit 4,30 Metern 18 Zentimeter kürzer als die Limousine ist, sind die Platzverhältnisse für die Insassen genauso großzügig wie beim „großen Bruder“. Das geht allerdings zu Lasten des Ladeabteils, das mit 415/1.380 zu 550/1.490 Liter Volumen deutlich kleiner ausgefallen ist. Aber nur im direkten Vergleich - im Segment der Kurzheck-Modelle ist das einer der besten Werte und mehr als ausreichend selbst für größere Einkäufe bei einem Baumarkt. Die Fahrleistungen und Verbräuche sind mit minimalen Vorteilen für die Limousine nahezu identisch und auch das Fahrverhalten unterscheidet sich künftig nicht, da der „klassische“ Rapid das optimierte Fahrwerk ebenfalls erhält. Bleibt also das Blechkleid. Die Front ist bis zur B-Säule gleich gezeichnet, doch die Silhouette des Spaceback wirkt mit ihren schlanken Säuleneinheiten und der hohen, scharf ausgeprägten Tornadolinie sowie mit dem deutlich kürzer ausfallenden hinteren Überhang einfach sportlicher, dynamischer als die Limousine. Und auch das Heck ist prägnanter, kräftiger gezeichnet. Im Prinzip stehen sich hier also Klassik und sportlicher Chic und sogar ein bisschen Lifestyle gegenüber und es könnte gut sein, dass Skoda sich damit eine neue Käuferschicht erschließt, ohne die bisherige zu verprellen.

So macht Autofahren – wenn die Straße denn halbwegs frei ist – einfach nur Spaß. Der Rapid Spaceback setzt auf einen klaren, eigenständigen Auftritt – mit besonderem Chic. Ein Auto mit sportlicher Frische und dynamischer Eleganz. Besondere Akzente setzt die Seitenansicht. Sie wirkt im Vergleich zu konventionellen Kurzheck-Modellen sportlicher und gestreckter, fast Coupé-artig. Damit setzt sich das Fahrzeug optisch und funktional vom Wettbewerbsumfeld ab. Die dynamische Silhouette wird geprägt durch eine klare Linienführung, den langen Radstand (2,60 Meter) und die scharfe, hohe Tornadolinie. VolAero Drones is working with famed outdoorsman Bill Booth to demonstrate that drones equipped with the latest thermal imaging equipment can effectively spot and track pythons at night – the prime hunting time. Over 100,000 Burmese pythons infesting the Florida Everglades have decimated 90 percent of small wildlife while surviving all attempts at eradication.
“Python hunters finally have a tool to make hunting more efficient, bringing down the python numbers that are devastating Florida’s Everglades,” said Booth. “This drone and thermal technology is light-years ahead of shining a flashlight into the darkness and hoping for the best. The thermal imagery picked up not just the monster pythons, but also native snakes as small as 18 inches. This suggests that we’ll be able to spot and eliminate clusters of python hatchlings, which will help curb their reproductive cycle.”
