Aurora Flight Sciences announced today that the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has awarded the company the prime contract for Phase 2 of the Agency’s Vertical Takeoff and Landing Experimental Plane (VTOL X-Plane) program.
VTOL X-Plane seeks to develop a technology demonstrator that could:
• Achieve a top sustained flight speed of 300 kt-400 kt
• Raise aircraft hover efficiency from 60 percent to at least 75 percent
• Present a more favorable cruise lift-to-drag ratio of at least 10, up from 5-6
• Carry a useful load of at least 40 percent of the vehicle’s projected gross weight of 10,000-12,000 pounds
The Aurora team’s design for its unmanned aircraft, named LightningStrike, seeks to provide an approximately 50-percent increase in speed over existing VTOL aircraft designed for comparable mission applications.

According to Bakov, the documents which support his announcement were deliberately and symbolically made public in Yekaterinburg. This city was chosen through having witnessed the most gruesome and ruthless act of regicide. During the press conference, the journalists were presented with the Memorandum of Friendship and Cooperation between The Republic of The Gambia and Romanov Empire, which had been signed December 1st in Banjul by the Secretary General of The Gambia Dawda D. Fadera and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Romanov Empire, Modou Lamin Saidykhan.
According to said document, the west African Republic of The Gambia became the first government to officially recognize Romanov Empire and establish diplomatic contacts with it. In exchange, Romanov Empire agreed to pay 60 Million USD to the budget of The Gambia.

The Heart Rhythm Society (HRS), through its efforts during Atrial Fibrillation Awareness Month in September and throughout the year, is working to raise awareness of the increased prevalence of the disease and the associated risk of stroke in patients living with atrial fibrillation (AFib). Today, HRS releases a new public service announcement (PSA) as part of its ongoing work to educate Americans about AFib, the most common heart arrhythmia, and how it increases one’s risk of stroke fivefold. AFib affects more than three million Americans and it is estimated that 12 to 16 million Americans will have AFib by 2050. AFib occurs when the upper chambers of the heart (the atria) fibrillate, or “quiver,” which causes a rapid, irregular heart rhythm. The normal heart rate for an adult is between 60 and 100 beats every minute. When the heart is experiencing AFib, the atria can beat over 300 times every minute.

Vier Modelle fallen im aktuellen Winterreifentest glatt durch und erhalten die Note „mangelhaft“. Aufgrund deutlicher Schwächen auf nasser Fahrbahn rät der ADAC vom Kauf des Kormoran Snowpro b2, des Maragoni 4 Winter E+, des Interstate Winter IWT-2 und des Sailun Ice Blazer WSL-2 ab. Verbraucher haben dennoch eine große Auswahl: Insgesamt haben ADAC und Stiftung Warentest 32 Modelle untersucht - elf Reifen erhalten ein „gut“ und sind damit besonders empfehlenswert. Gleich sieben gute Reifenmodelle gibt es in der kleinen Dimension mit der Größe 185/60 R15T (z.B. für Audi A 1, Citroën C3, Fiat Punto Renault Clio, VW Polo). Testsieger mit Bestnoten auf nasser Fahrbahn sowie auf Schnee und auf Eis ist der Continental ContiWinterContact TS850. Der neu entwickelte Dunlop Winter Response-2 überzeugt die Tester besonders auf nasser Fahrbahn, auf Schnee und beim Kraftstoffverbrauch. Ebenfalls sparsam ist der Semperit Speed-Grip 2. Der Michelin Alpin A4 glänzt beim Verschleiß und der Nokian WR D3 überzeugt auf trockener Fahrbahn. Bei den größeren Reifen (225/45 R17H z.B. für Audi A 3, Mercedes C-Klasse, Opel Astra, Skoda Oktavia) schneiden vier Produkte mit „gut“ ab. Drei Modelle setzen nach Ansicht der Tester besondere Akzente: Der Continental ContiWinterContact TS850 mit der Topbewertung auf Schnee, der Bridgestone Blizzak LM-32S mit der Bestnote auf Nässe und der Michelin Alpin A4 mit dem geringsten Verschleiß. Der ADAC Winterreifentest hat insgesamt 18 Prüfkategorien und bietet somit dem Verbraucher umfassende Informationen. Es wird unter anderem ein Praxistest auf einer verschneiten Passstraße, umfangreiche Brems- und Ausweichversuche auf Nässe, Schnee und Eis sowie Tests zu Verschleiß und Kraftstoffverbrauch durchgeführt. Im Gegensatz dazu bietet das EU-Reifenlabel nur Informationen zu Rollwiderstand, Nassbremsen und Außenfahrgeräusch - wie wintertauglich ein Pneu ist, zeigt es nicht.
Schockierende Ergebnisse beim aktuellen ADAC Werkstatt-Test: 78 Prozent der getesteten freien Werkstätten sind glatt durchgefallen - 28 von 36 untersuchten Betrieben haben die Bewertung „mangelhaft“ erhalten. Bei den Werkstatt-Ketten (A.T.U, Bosch, Meisterhaft und 1a Autoservice) sieht das Bild nur unwesentlich besser aus – hier fielen 17 von 36 Betrieben durch (47 Prozent). Des Weiteren zeigt der Test deutlich, dass die Freien bei der Inspektion nicht günstiger sind als die Ketten. Insgesamt enttäuschend bei dieser Stichprobe des ADAC: Von allen getesteten 72 Betrieben (Freie und Werkstatt-Ketten) erhielten gerade einmal sechs die Wertung „sehr gut“ (8 Prozent). Testgewinner bei den Ketten ist ein A.T.U-Betrieb in Hamburg (Heidhorst 3). Positiv: Keine einzige A.T.U-Werkstatt erhielt die Note mangelhaft. Den Testern des ADAC fiel bei A.T.U zudem auf, dass bei der Inspektionsannahme offen und realistisch über die voraussichtlichen Kosten gesprochen wird. Sechs der neun getesteten A.T.U-Service-Unternehmen fanden alle vom ADAC vorbereiteten Mängel. Bei den Bosch-Werkstätten fielen drei Betriebe durch, bei „1a“ sechs und bei Meisterhaft acht. Von allen freien Werkstätten hat Riegelhof Karosseriebau in Frankfurt/Main am besten abgeschnitten.Der Club hat die Werkstätten mit Fahrzeugen der Modelle Audi A3, Renault Megane und VW Golf 5 getestet. Vor der Prüfung wurden die Autos mit Mängeln präpariert: Ein verstelltes Scheinwerferlicht, eine defekte Kofferraumleuchte, ein ausgehängtes ABS-Kabel, ein zu niedriger Kühlmittelstand sowie ein Ersatzrad mit zu wenig Reifendruck, fehlendes oder abgelaufenes Pannenset. Die Arbeitsleistung wurde mit höchstens 60 Punkten, der Service mit maximal 40 Punkten bewertet. Punktabzug gab es, wenn wesentliche Serviceleistungen fehlten oder Zusatzarbeiten ohne vorherigen Auftrag ausgeführt wurden. Fazit des ADAC: Auch im Werkstatt-Test 2013 arbeiteten viele Betriebe die Inspektionsliste nicht sorgfältig ab, da nicht alle versteckten Fehler gefunden wurden. Nachholbedarf gibt es auch beim Kundenservice. Deshalb rät der Club den Verbrauchern, den Wagen zusammen mit dem Serviceberater anzuschauen und den Wartungsauftrag schriftlich zu erteilen. So werden Missverständnisse weitgehend ausgeschlossen.
