Lundi prochain, la Fondation L’Oréal, avec le soutien de L’Oréal France, la Commission française pour l’UNESCO et l’Académie des Sciences, récompensera 25 jeunes femmes scientifiques doctorantes. Elles ont été sélectionnées par un Jury présidé par Philippe Taquet, Président de l’Académie des sciences et composé de membres émérites de la communauté scientifique. Chacune d’entre elles a été distinguée pour la qualité et le fort potentiel de ses travaux de recherche. A l’occasion de la cérémonie de remise des Bourses L’Oréal France-UNESCO, ces jeunes femmes (26 ans en moyenne) recevront ainsi une bourse de 15 000 euros pour les soutenir dans leurs travaux et leur carrière scientifique, domaine où les femmes sont encore sous-représentées.

Nach dem bereits Anfang Oktober im Staat Washington ist jetzt der nächste Tesla diesmal in Mexico in Flammen aufgegangen. Wie ein Internet-Video dokumentiert, war das Fahrzeug vom Typ Model S zuvor bei einem schweren Unfall beschädigt worden. „Bereits Anfang des Monats hatte ja ein Tesla-Brand in den USA für Aufsehen gesorgt. Bei dem dortigen Unfall hatte ein Metallstück ein knapp acht Zentimeter langes Loch in die Armierung eines der 15 flüssigkeitsgekühlten Akkumodule des Model S gerissen und damit den Brand ausgelöst, der gelöscht werden konnte, noch bevor er die Fahrgastzelle erreichte. Aufgrund der politisch bedingten “Auszeit” vieler Behörden in den USA kam die Verkehrsbehörde NHTSA erst vor wenigen Tagen dazu, sich um den Brand im Staat Washington zu kümmern.
The 19th Azerbaijan International IT and Telecommunications exhibition Bakutel 2013 will be the largest in the event’s history and coincides with the country’s ‘Year of ICT’, an initiative of President, Ilham Aliyev.

Three-time U.S. Olympian Deena Kastor, 41, raced to a first place finish at the 11th Annual More Magazine/Fitness Magazine Women’s Half-Marathon in New York City’s Central Park on Sunday, April 13, 2014. Kastor shattered the previous course record time of 1:13:25.051 set in 2013, running a blazing 1:11:38, setting setting not only a new event record, but also a new U.S. Masters record. Local runners Tsehay Geisto of New York, NY, took second place in 1:15:07, while Aregash Gubae placed third in 1:18:35.

Audubon Zoo recently welcomed an addition to its animal collection and it’s a big one: Bonnie, a 15–year–old Southern White Rhino weighing in at more than two tons. She joins Audubon Zoo’s lone male rhino, Saba, and two other females, Yvonne and Macite, age 51, the world’s oldest rhino in captivity.

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, www.stjude.org, announced today the appointment of James R. Downing, M.D., as its new CEO, effective July 15, 2014. Downing most recently has served as the Deputy Director, Executive Vice President and Scientific Director of the hospital, which is leading the way the world understands, treats and defeats pediatric cancer and other catastrophic diseases. Downing’s primary focus immediately upon assuming the CEO office will be to oversee a new era of clinical, research and infrastructure expansion throughout the St. Jude global network. He succeeds Dr. William E. Evans, who is retiring from the position after 10 years and returning full time to his long-standing pharmacogenomics research program at St. Jude.
