Only 3 vehicles of more than 100 evaluated by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety have child restraint installation hardware that earns a good rating for ease of use, while more than half have hardware that is poor or marginal.
The Institute's new LATCH ratings will serve as a resource for families looking for a vehicle that makes it easy to transport their children safely. They also are intended to encourage vehicle manufacturers to pay attention to this equipment and make improvements. Properly installed, age-appropriate child restraints provide considerably more protection for children in crashes than safety belts alone. However, observational studies have found that parents and caregivers often fail to secure them tightly or make other installation mistakes.
LATCH, which stands for Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children, is intended to make it easier to install a child seat properly. It works: Child restraints installed with LATCH, rather than with vehicle safety belts, are more likely to be installed correctly, research has shown. But in many vehicles, LATCH hardware could be better. Parents are more likely to install the seat correctly when the LATCH hardware meets certain key ease-of-use criteria.
Johnson Controls, a global multi-industrial company, is constantly focusing on improving the future of car seating. Thinking ahead, Johnson Controls will present its seating demonstrator vehicle SD15 to customers and media at the 66th Frankfurt Autoshow. The SD15 features a simulated vehicle environment with a focus on first- and second-row seating while addressing the three automotive megatrends from a seating perspective: autonomous driving, lightweight, and increasing customer demands towards individualization and style for future urban mobility.
Furthermore, the stylish ink jet printed seat covers of the SD15 show what Johnson Controls can do in terms of individualization. The weight and space saving multi-material seats padded with highly ergonomic foam parts pave the way towards the demands of lightweight design. Many SD15 features support the megatrend of autonomous driving in the future “multi-talented” vehicle seat.
The SD15’s front row features a power driver seat mounted to a curved track, eliminating the need for separate and complex mechanisms found in conventional seat arrangements. The seat offers a control console mounted directly to the seat structure that moves conveniently with the occupant, instead of being fixed between the seats which offers wireless charging options for mobile devices.

Subaru of America, Inc. today announced the completion of a Pet Travel Seat Pilot Study as part of its continued partnership with Center for Pet Safety (CPS), a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit research and consumer advocacy organization. Subaru and CPS have tested pet products most commonly used by pet parents when traveling. Phase one tested pet harnesses, phase two tested pet crates and carriers, and now, phase three has tested pet travel seats.
A pet travel seat is typically used in a vehicle to hold or elevate the pet, but does not offer full containment. The Pet Travel Seat Pilot Study found that while a pet travel seat may offer distraction prevention, it will likely not offer crash protection in the event of an accident, which could lead to injury of the pet and the human vehicle passengers. The quality of commonly available pet travel seats did not provide effective protection in a crash scenario.
Based on the scientific test evidence collected over the past four years, in part through its partnership with Subaru, CPS can now identify the safest travel options for most pets. For small dogs and cats, Center for Pet Safety recommends one of the 2015 Top Performing Carriers; for medium and large dogs either the 2015 Top Performing Crate - Gunner Kennels G1 Intermediate with 8' Tie Down Straps, or a Center for Pet Safety Certified Harness. Every 33 seconds a child under 13 is involved in a car crash in the United States, according to 2014 data from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Safety seats, if used correctly, can dramatically reduce the risk of fatality or injury. But 59 percent of car seats are misused in a way that could reduce their effectiveness, and over one-third of children killed in car crashes were completely unrestrained at the time of the crash. Today, NHTSA and the Ad Council unveiled a new series of public service advertisements (PSAs) to educate parents and caregivers about the importance of selecting the right seat for their child’s age and size, and to remind them that car seats, booster seats and seat belts offer the best protection for children in crashes and help save lives.
“Life can change in an instant. We want parents and caregivers to prepare for the unexpected, rather than face their worst nightmare,” said Dr. Mark Rosekind, NHTSA administrator. “Buckling up a child correctly and in the right seat is the best protection any parent can do to see their child walk away unharmed from a car crash.”

On the eve of his 16th birthday, Greyson McCluskey from Indian Trail, North Carolina was named the national winner of Wouldn’t It Be Cool If…, a campaign jointly presented by Time Warner Cable’s philanthropic science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) initiative, Connect a Million Minds, and i.am FIRST, founded by artist, entertainer and entrepreneur will.i.am. Beim großen Golf GTI-Treffen am Wörthersee enthüllte Audi seinen TT ultra quattro concept - eine Technikstudie, die minimales Gewicht und maximale Sportlichkeit vereint. Diese Sportlichkeit bekamen die Fans auch von der breiten Palette der High-Performance-Cars geboten. Neben dem legendären Sport quattro S1 standen aktuelle RS-Modelle und reinrassige Rennboliden zur Schau. Und auch der Audi R18 e-tron quattro war am See dabei. Im Mittelpunkt des Audi-Auftritts stand aber das TT ultra quattro concept. Das Showcar vereint schlanke 1.111 Kilogramm Gesamtgewicht mit einem 2.0 TFSI-Motor, dessen 228 kW/310 PS und 400 Nm leichtes Spiel mit dem Coupé haben. Aus dem Stand katapultiert sich der TT ultra quattro concept in 4,2 Sekunden auf 100 km/h. Sein Leistungsgewicht von 3,6 kg/PS liegt auf dem Niveau reinrassiger Supersportwagen. Und es lohnt sich auch der Blick ins Detail, schließlich macht das Konzeptauto den automobilen Leichtbau sichtbar. Schon das aktuelle Serienauto mit einem Karosserie-Gewicht von nur 206 Kilogramm plus 98 Kilogramm für die Anbauteile ist ein Beleg für die hohe Leichtbau-Kompetenz von Audi. Für die Karosserie des Wörthersee-Showcars haben die Ingenieure aus Ingolstadt und Neckarsulm den Audi Space Frame (ASF) der aktuellen TT-Generation konsequent weiterentwickelt und die Karosseriestruktur noch einmal um 43 Kilogramm abgespeckt. Zusammen mit den optimierten Anbauteilen ergeben sich 100 Kilogramm Gewichtseinsparung. Die Kombination aus Leichtigkeit und Sportlichkeit spiegelt sich auch in der Optik wieder. Im Vergleich zum Serienmodell haben die Audi Designer die Konturen des Showcars noch einmal deutlich gestrafft. Mit seinen großen Spoilern stellt der TT ultra quattro concept seine Motorsport-Gene zur Schau. So ist der Fuß des Heckflügels als tragendes Bauteil aus gefrästem Aluminium gefertigt, der Flügel als funktionales Element hingegen aus sichtbarem Carbon. Zu den weiteren Highlights am Wörthersee zählte der neue Audi RS 6 Avant. Das Hochleistungsmodell der quattro GmbH bietet mehr Effizienz und stärkere Fahrleistungen bei verringertem Gewicht. Und natürlich durfte auch der neue RS 7 Sportback fehlen. Sein starkes Herz ist ebenfalls der 4.0 TFSI V8 Biturbo. Die Leistung von 412 kW / 560 PS liegt im Bereich von 5.700 bis 6.600 Umdrehungen an. Zwischen 1.750 und 5.500 1/min sind konstant 700 Nm Drehmoment verfügbar. Neben dem raketenartigen Schub ist der Sound ein wichtiger Bestandteil des Fahrerlebnisses: Auf Tastendruck und beim kräftigen Gas geben sorgen schaltbare Klappen in der Abgasanlage für einen noch volleren Klang, optional montiert Audi eine Sport-Abgasanlage. Ebenso auf dem Audi Stand präsentierte sich der neue Audi RS Q3 als erstes RS-Modell in der erfolgreichen Q Familie. Es ist das vierte Modell, das die quattro GmbH in diesem Jahr auf den Markt bringen wird. Mit dem 2.5 TFSI-Motor, der mit einer Spitzenleistung von 228 kW /310 PS aufwartet, steckt ein preisgekrönter Hochleistungsmotor unter der Haube des RS Q3.
Beim diesjährigen traditionellen GTI-Treffen am Wörthersee präsentierte Skoda gleich fünf sportliche Modelle. Highlight war die zweifelsohne die Weltpremiere der Studie Rapid SPORT. Außerdem mit dabei der neue Octavia Combi mit Sportpaket, den Citigo Motorsport der Fabia RS Motorsport sowie der erfolgreiche Rallyewagen Fabia S2000. Der Rapid SPORT zeigt das Potential des Skoda Designs und die Möglichkeiten, die im Rapid stecken. Das Fahrzeug ist in den Metallicfarben Corrida-Rot und Steel-Grau lackiert. Satt und markant steht der Sportwagen auf seinen wuchtigen 19-Zoll-Leichtmetall-Rädern. Die Fahrzeugfront besticht durch Spoiler und den kraftvoll gestalteten Lufteinlass in der Schürze. Großzügig dimensionierte Kotflügel und massive Schweller unterstreichen den Auftritt des Fahrzeugs. Weitere sportliche Akzente setzt das Heck mit dem voluminösen Stoßfänger und zwei integrierten Auspuff Endrohren. Pünktlich zur Markteinführung des neuen Octavia Combi präsentierte der tschechische Autobauer auch ein Sportpaket für den Lademeister. Zur Ausstattung gehören ein Frontgrill in glänzendem Schwarz sowie ein rot-schwarzer Frontspoiler. Die Spiegelkappen und die Dachträger sind schwarz-glänzend, der Heckdiffusor in Rot und Schwarz gehalten. Pure Dynamik zeigt auch der Citigo Motorsport: Wirkungsvoll kontrastiert die weiße Wagenfarbe mit schwarzen Längsstreifen auf der Motorhaube und dem dunkel verglasten Panoramadach. Ein spezielles ‚Sport-Kit' umfasst Front- und Dachspoiler sowie Heck-Diffusor, jeweils in der Farbe ‚Deep Black'. In der Frontansicht fällt ein dekorativer schwarzer Streifen am unteren Stoßfänger ins Auge. Der ŠKODA Citigo Motorsport steht auf 16-Zoll-Leichtmetallrädern, alternativ in Weiß oder in der Kombination Schwarz-Metallic/Silber. Ein kompaktes Kraftpaket ist der Fabia RS Motorsport - Edition UK. Das Fahrzeug ist in Candy-Weiß lackiert, dazu gehören schwarze Elemente als spannender Kontrast: Das Dach ist schwarz, ebenso der Frontgrill. Die Frontscheinwerfer sind schwarz hinterlegt, die Nebelscheinwerfer schwarz eingefasst. Die Dachlinie endet mit einem schwarzen Spoiler. Getönte Scheiben betonen den sportlichen Charakter. Ein besonderer Hingucker in Reifnitz war der Rallyewagen Fabia S2000. Das Fahrzeug gehört zu den erfolgreichsten Autos des internationalen Rallyesports. Die Leistungsfähigkeit und Zuverlässigkeit des Fabia S2000 legte die Grundlage für eine Vielzahl an Skoda Rennsiegen. So zählte die Saison 2012 dank des Fabia S2000 zu den erfolgreichsten Jahren in der Motorsportgeschichte von Skoda. Auch in der laufenden Saison zeigt sich der Fabia S2000 weiter von seiner besten Seite mit Siegen in der Rallye-Europameisterschaft und der Weltmeisterschafts-Kategorie WRC-2.
Auf der wichtigsten internationalen Automesse der Welt bemühen sich alle Auto-Hersteller besonders zu glänzen. So ist klar, dass sich auf der Frankfurter IAA Premiere an Premiere reiht, denn Neuheiten stehen in der Publikumsgunst ganz vorne. Dabei ist es egal, ob es sich um deutsche oder ausländische Autobauer handelt, ist es egal, ob es um sich auf die IAA getaktete neue Modelle oder um extra für die Motorshow entwickelte Concept Cars handelt. Bei der Vielzahl der Weltpremieren ist nur eine kleine Auswahl möglich. Bei den Serienfahrzeugen sorgen unter anderem der Mercedes GLA, der BMW i3, der Peugeot 308 für Furore. Bei den Concept Cars sind es der Opel Monza, der Infiniti Q30, der Lexus LN-XF, das Volvo Coupé, der smart Fourjoy, der Citroen Cactus und der Renault Initiale Paris für besonderes Interesse. Nicht zuletzt, weil etliche dieser Studien schon bald und nur leicht verändert auf den Markt kommen werden.
