A man sets the ringtone for his bank text message alerts to the sound of “toilet flush” every time he pays a checking fee. A family decides to move at the same speed it takes to pay down their mortgage – in slow motion. A man in pajamas races out the door to mail a last minute check the old-fashioned way. In its new television advertising campaign, ING DIRECT USA, the nation’s largest direct bank, uses these awkward scenarios to convey a better way to bank – “Touch the Ball.”

The American Pain Foundation (APF), in partnership with professional baseball player LaTroy Hawkins, acknowledges those suffering from Postherpetic Neuralgia (PHN) today, as it recognizes the second annual PHN Awareness Day. PHN Awareness Day was created to raise awareness to the pain caused by shingles and PHN, also known as after-shingles pain. Shingles is caused by the reactivation of the same virus that causes chickenpox and can affect an individual who has had chickenpox at anytime without warning. More than 90 percent of adults in the United States have had chickenpox, placing them at risk for shingles. One in every five of the 1 million Americans who have had shingles each year may go on to develop PHN, a potentially devastating condition that disproportionately affects those over the age of 50 or with weakened immune systems.

As the sun begins to set on summer vacation, families are making room for new wardrobes, new friends and new daily routines. Kids will be back in the habit of eating lunch on a regular schedule and dinner should be the same way. But with nearly 8.4 million students enrolled in after school activities this year, families are constantly on the go with little time to prepare a wholesome family meal. This back-to-school season, Bob Evans is offering a solution.

This design of a unique non contact chuck, was a part of a much larger scale design and engineering project of a wet processing machine for the semiconductor industry.
The client requested Vertex to design, engineer and produce a scalable new chuck that can hold the wafer from the bottom end and at the same time process the same side which the wafer is held from. We had strict instructions not to have any contact with the top side of the wafer, due to sensitive semiconductor design on that side, therefore the name “Non Contact Chuck”.
This unique design had to overcome and avoid collision of the wafer’s holding fingers with the process module while scanning the wafer above it. This resulted in holding fingers behaving like Millipede legs.
Challenges in this design were enormous.
The chuck had to spin 360 degrees, travel on the Z axis, pressurize the top side of the wafer with air to prevent any liquid from getting to the top side, as well as, pneumatically control and actuate each finger at the right time.
Great project to work on, great challenge and great results.

Maybe parents don’t know their teens as well as they think. According to a new 30 Hour Famine study, less than one in ten parents of teens (9%) describe teenagers today as “generous”. More than half of parents (58%) describe teenagers as “lazy”, and almost as many (54%) describe teens as “selfish”. And yet more than half of those teens themselves (53%) say the current economic climate has made them more aware of the needs of others. And almost nine out of ten (89%) of teens in the same online survey, conducted by Harris Interactive in January, say they wish they could do more to help those in need.

9000 kilometres across some really rough terrain – that’s the challenge facing the rally drivers taking part in the “Dakar Rally” in January. Two weeks of stress and strain. The head of motor racing in charge of the teams is under enormous pressure too, but in his case it’s not confined to that single fortnight. All year long he has to put together a car drawing on a given budget; a car that will pose a genuine threat to the competition. At the same time he must organise and supervise: the safety of the entire team, the fitness of the drivers and co-drivers, the transportation of the equipment, and so on and so forth. Mhoch4 has accompanied Volkswagen’s head of motor racing Kris Nissen and seen the extent of the demands made on him on the eve of the Dakar Rally.
