Thirty five percent of New Yorkers do not feel prepared for an emergency, such as a natural disaster, fire, power outage or act of terrorism according to a 2013 survey conducted by the New York City Office of Emergency Management (OEM). September is National Preparedness Month (NPM) and a new public service advertising (PSA) campaign is launching today to encourage New York families to create an emergency plan. The PSAs were distributed to media outlets throughout the New York City area and will be running in donated time and space.

Retailers are getting ready to make the switch from primarily accepting traditional magnetic strip cards to EMV. EMV – Europay, Mastercard and Visa – is a credit card with a small chip that more securely validates transactions than magnetic strip cards. Much of the world uses EMV and Europe has used EMV for years.
Today, more than six thousand pancake lovers from around the globe gathered in Monument Circle in Indianapolis, Indiana for a pancake fundraiser hosted by IHOP Restaurants and Kiwanis International. Thousands of Kiwanis volunteers, in town for their annual convention, and members of general public enjoyed free IHOP pancakes and coffee. Two dozen IHOP cooks prepared the pancakes made from more than 240 gallons IHOP’s famous buttermilk pancake batter, which were accompanied by 189 gallons of maple syrup, 94 pounds of butter and 625 gallons of coffee.
The celebratory event raised funds through voluntary donations to help eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus through the Eliminate Project. It was the first in a series of events planned by IHOP Restaurants as part of its “Summer of Smiles” campaign that celebrates individuals and organizations which have devoted countless hours to making others smile through their philanthropy. The celebration coincides with the family-friendly brand’s launch of a new ‘smiling’ logo and its 57th Anniversary.

The Class of 2017, the first crop of Generation Z (people born between 1993 and 1999) to enter the workforce, is more interested in working for large companies compared to last year’s grads (19 percent vs. 14 percent), according to a new study by Accenture Strategy on the future workforce. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced today that it is seeking applicants for its Youth Preparedness Council. FEMA’s Youth Preparedness Council was formed in 2012 to bring together teens from across the country who are interested and engaged in advocating for preparedness. Council members are selected based on their dedication to public service, efforts in making a difference in their communities, and potential to expand their impact as national advocates for preparedness. Students in 8th through 11th grade are eligible to apply.
