In December 2012, we posted an OnSafety blog, warning of furniture, television and appliance-related tip-over incidents. At that time, CPSC reported nearly 350 deaths, most involving young children. Since then, more than 80 people have died when a dresser, TV, bookcase, table, appliance or other large item tipped over and fell on them. A new report from our staff indicates that 430 tragic deaths occurred between 2000 and 2013, and an estimated 38,000 annual injuries, many of which were serious, from 2011 through 2013.
In most of the incidents, a child was crushed by the product or struck on the head by the product. What is remarkable is the number of families who have turned tragedy into advocacy. Jackie Collas, a Philadelphia-area resident, is using social media to honor her son, Curren, and encourage parents to anchor their furniture. Lisa Seifert of Chicago created Shane’s Foundation to honor her precious son and to increase awareness, education and safety.

Samruk Kazyna, Kazakhstan’s sovereign wealth fund managing major strategic state assets with the combined value of close to $100 bn, is overhauling its business strategy, including approaches to investments and to asset management.
New management mechanisms will soon be introduced in all of the Fund’s companies. As early as 2014, business processes reengineering will start in three pilot organizations – diversified transport holding Kazakhstan Temir Zholy, oil and gas company KazMunaiGaz and postal service operator KazPochta.
These measured will result in operating costs reduction of 20% by 2017, and Samruk Kazyna’s economic value added will generate more than $11.2 bn for Kazakhstan’s economy.

In an effort to help parents better understand why ignoring dental health can have serious consequences, and educate families about good dental health habits, the Ad Council and The Partnership for Healthy Mouths, Healthy Lives created new Public Service Ads (PSAs) for the Kids’ Healthy Mouths campaign. The new PSAs are humorous depictions of life lessons which make the point that while parenting can be tricky at times, getting kids to brush for two minutes, twice a day can be easier than most other things parents will try to teach their children. The new PSAs debut today at the American Dental Association (ADA) annual meeting and are now available for nationwide distribution.

Bees are responsible for one in every three bites of food we eat, but their populations are in decline, threatening the food supply as we know it today. According to a recent survey conducted by Cascadian Farm, more than 60 percent of Americans are unfamiliar with colony loss, the phenomenon characterized by honey bees abandoning their hives, never to return. McGruff the Crime Dog is about to “Take A Bite Out Of Crime,” specifically financial and investment fraud. Researchers estimate that consumer financial fraud cost Americans over $50 billion a year. In addition, a survey by the FINRA Investor Education Foundation of U.S. adults age 40 and older found that more than 80 percent of respondents have been solicited to participate in a potentially fraudulent scheme, and over 40 percent of those surveyed could not identify classic red flags of fraud.

John Peden was one of those larger-than-life personalities. “When he would walk into a room, it was like all the attention was on him,” said his stepdaughter, Jenna Peden. “He just had this power emanating out of him.”

Finding time to eat well doesn’t mean you have to resort to eating out or going through the drive through during this busy fall season. New data analysis, supported in part by by Nestlé USA, indicates that people who reported dining on frozen meals ate fewer calories per day and consumed less saturated fat than those who reported eating fast food meals, also known as quick service restaurant (QSR) meals.1 The findings also showed that those who reported eating frozen meals consumed more essential nutrients than those who reported opting for fast food meals.
The findings are based on a new analysis of data from the 2003-2010 What We Eat In America (WWEIA) National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), a program of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
