PSI, a leading international health organization with programs in 67 countries, launches the latest issue of its global health magazine Impact, which answers the question: What is the future of international development? Fifty years ago, President John F. Kennedy created the U.S. Agency of International Development (USAID) to address Americans’ increasing dissatisfaction with foreign aid. Today the U.S. spends less than 1% of its total budget on foreign aid. How will sweeping new USAID reforms enable the Agency to make the most of taxpayer money? And how are international organizations approaching development on the ground? To view Multimedia News Release, go to http://multivu.prnewswire.com/mnr/psi/47715/

Rising food prices are causing poor children and families in developing countries to sink deeper into hunger and malnutrition, according to Children International, a leading U.S.-based humanitarian organization. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization, 925 million people around the world go hungry each day compared to 848 million in 2007. Experts blame the high cost of gasoline and diesel fuel as a main cause for the spike in food prices globally. As gas prices soared in 2010, food prices have risen with the same speed, leaving poor families helped by Children International with few options. Most poor parents work long hours for little pay and lack the money needed to purchase food and cook a nutritious meal. Poor children in the Dominican Republic will now have a chance at a better life through Children International, a U.S.-based humanitarian organization, thanks to businessman Larry Phelan. The Philadelphia attorney funded the newly inaugurated signature community center that will serve 5,000 children in the slum of La Caleta near Santo Domingo. The center will provide children access to medical and dental care, education support, and nutritional programs. Mr. Phelan was inspired to work with Children International by his friend Dan Phelan, who funded another center in the Dominican Republic. Much like Dan’s facility, the Larry T. Phelan Community Center is state-of-the-art, with a medical clinic, dental clinic, pharmacy, library, playground, computer lab and a sports complex.
