Reed Street Productions, creators of the first-ever zombie-infested 5K obstacle race, Run for Your Lives, announced today it will double its races in 2013 – expanding to 21 locations, including nine yet-to-be-invaded cities. New this year, participants can expect to encounter increasingly challenging obstacles and an enhanced Apocalypse Party experience. Additionally, Run For Your Lives added the Kennedy Krieger Institute – an internationally recognized institution dedicated to improving the lives of individuals with disorders and injuries of the brain – as its official charitable partner for 2013.

Eagle Rare Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey has named Tonya M. Evans of Lawrence, Kansas as the winner of the Grand Prize 2013 Rare Life Award. The number of safety incidents at processing plants has increased as the nation’s refineries have aged. During the first two weeks of 2013, a total of 27 process safety incidents, including fires, leaks and fugitive emissions were reported at U.S. refineries. This incident rate could climb even higher as the U.S. is expected to be the world’s top oil producer by 2017 and plants are pushed even harder. To further compound these risks, the industry is experiencing a “brain drain.” More than half of the most seasoned oil and gas professionals are set to retire in the next few years.

In the wake of recent tragedy, the Newtown community came together to show the nation the true meaning of “Newtown strong.” It was inspiring to see such overwhelming support for a small, quiet town in the face of such extreme adversity.
The Strides for Sandy Hook 5k memorial run/walk was created as a way for local residents to continue the healing process. The 5k took place on Saturday, January 19, 2013. The unofficial community run honored the lives of victims lost in the December 14, 2012 tragedy. While there was a suggested donation of $25 for participants, any amount was accepted—no matter how big or small. Strides for Sandy Hook attracted nearly 200 walkers and runners and raised over $3,600 on January 19 alone. All donations and proceeds were given towards a memorial fund established by Newtown Parks and Recreation, the Newtown Park Gift Fund.
