Consumers seeking locally sourced products can easily find one in an everyday pantry staple – vegetable oil, which is primarily 100 percent soybean oil made from soybeans grown in the U.S. Sales of vegetable oil support more than 550,000 U.S. soybean farmers who strive to leave the land in better shape than they found it for America’s next generation of farmers. “I work hard to help produce an ingredient that I am proud to serve to my own family, as well as families across the U.S.,” said United Soybean Board (USB) Chairman Bob Haselwood. “Every time you purchase vegetable oil, or soybean oil, you’re supporting local farmers.” Haselwood produces soybeans on his farm in Berryton, Kansas. Many retailers sell soybean oil primarily produced with U.S.-grown soybeans. This past summer, USB partnered with a large Midwest grocery retail chain with 200+ stores to emphasize the importance of knowing where food comes from and educate about the benefits of soybean oil. During this promotion, unit sales of the store brand vegetable oil rose more than 27 percent over the same time last year, and shoppers commented that they were more likely to purchase soybean oil knowing it’s a U.S.-grown product. Die Deutsche Umwelthilfe (DUH) ist nicht dafür bekannt, allzu autofreundlich zu sein. Mit zahlreichen Vorschlägen für einen effektiveren Umweltschutz hat sie jedoch auch immer wieder Denkanstöße gegeben und wäre vielleicht erfolgreicher, wenn sie nicht häufig übers Ziel hinausschösse. So jetzt auch auf einer Presse-Konferenz in Berlin, wo die Testergebnisse von realistischen Verbrauchsmessungen bekannt gegeben wurden. Bei diesem Anlass erklärte nämlich Dr. Axel Friedrich, früherer Leiter der Abteilung Verkehr und Lärm im Umweltbundesamt: „Die Stadt ist für ein Treffen für Menschen und nicht für Autos gemacht. Bis auf die notwendigen Lieferverkehre, um die Stadt am Leben zu erhalten, sollte man das Auto aus den Innenstädten herausnehmen.“ Eine steile These von Dr. Friedrich, der bis auf die Schlagworte Parkraumbewirtschaftung und Spurenverringerung – die ja teilweise schon umgesetzt werden – allerdings keinen wirklich Vorschlag machte, wie die Mobilität ohne Individual-Verkehr aufrecht erhalten werden kann. Denn das Busse, die Straßenbahn oder die S-Bahn beim Personenverkehr weniger Raum benötigen, gilt nur, wenn diese Transportmittel gut gefüllt und nicht – teilweise – fast leer ihre Routen abspulen. Und sorgen erst recht nicht für ein Treffen der Menschen in einer Stadt, wenn diese öffentlichen Verkehrsmittel vor allem an Wochenenden nur in größeren zeitlichen Abständen verkehren. Zugegeben - leicht ist es nicht, die individuellen Bedürfnisse mit den Möglichkeiten des ja ohnehin sehr kostenintensiven ÖPNV zu kombinieren. Ganz abgesehen davon, dass ja nicht jeder Stadtbewohner es nur fünf oder zehn Gehminuten bis zur Haltestelle hat. Richtig an der These von Dr. Friedrich ist derzeit also nur die wiederum sehr alte These, dass etwas gegen die verstopften Innenstädte getan werden muss. Doch da müssen schon intelligentere Ideen als die Herausnahme der Autos aus den Städten auf den Tisch. Wäre ja unter anderem auch eine Aufgabe für die Deutsche Umwelthilfe, die sich nicht nur aus Spenden, sondern auch durch öffentliche Fördermittel finanziert.

Today at the 10th Annual Meeting of the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) in New York City, the Ad Council in partnership with Year Up, the Employment Pathways Project, ConPRmetidos, MENTOR: The National Mentoring Partnership, New Options Project, and Opportunity Nation launched the national “Grads of Life” campaign to help businesses fill more than 4 million vacant positions within the United States with qualified workers. The launch took place during CGI’s inaugural in-person meeting of the new Youth Employment Action Network attended by both business and non-profit leaders.
Secretary Hillary Clinton shared a message in support of the launch: “As we continue the work of Job One at The Clinton Foundation, we need to continue to build partnerships and to recruit more businesses to solve this important economic challenge. Das gilt jedenfalls für die elf handelsüblichen Sommerreifen der Größe 225/45 R 17, die die GTÜ Gesellschaft für Technische Überwachung im Fahrbetrieb praktisch getestet hat. Diese Reifen sind ohne Ausnahme unterm Strich entweder empfehlenswert (7) oder sehr empfehlenswert (4). Dabei begutachteten die GTÜ-Experten gemeinsam mit den Testern des ACE Auto Club Europa die Reifeneigenschaften auf dem Gebiet Sicherheit etwa bei nasser und trockener Fahrbahn sowie in den Bereichen Umwelt und Wirtschaftlichkeit. Dabei überzeugten die Breitreifen fast durch die Bank mit hohen Sicherheitsreserven selbst auf nasser Straße. Bewertet wurden die Fabrikate in insgesamt zwölf einzelnen Kategorien. Aus der Prüfung von GTÜ und ACE ging der Conti SportContact 5 mit 143 von 190 erreichbaren Punkten als Testsieger hervor. Der Preis für einen Vierer-Satz dieser Reifen ist mit einem vom Bundesverband Reifenhandel ermittelten Durchschnittspreis von 556 Euro von allen getesteten Mitbewerbern allerdings auch am höchsten (siehe Ergebnistabelle). Vom Einkaufspreis her betrachtet am günstigsten ist der Apollo Aspire 4GXL (119 von 190 Punkten/empfehlenswert), bei dem der Reifensatz lediglich um die 400 Euro kostet.
