The nation’s rate of preterm birth—the largest contributor to infant death in the United States -- increased again in 2016, after nearly a decade of decline, earning the nation a “C” grade on the latest March of Dimes Premature Birth Report Card.
The rate of preterm birth rose in states across the country for a second year in a row. More than 380,000 babies are born preterm in the U.S. each year, facing a greater likelihood of death before their first birthday, lifelong disabilities or chronic health conditions. An additional 8,000 babies were born prematurely in 2016 due to the increase in the preterm birth rate between 2015 and 2016, the March of Dimes says.

Acclaimed poet Bao Phi delivers a powerful, honest glimpse into a relationship between father and son—and between cultures, old and new. A Different Pond is an unforgettable story about a simple event—a long-ago fishing trip. Between hope-filled casts, Bao’s father told him about a different pond in their homeland of Vietnam. The New York Times has said that Bao Phi’s poetry “rhymes with the truth.” Together with graphic novelist Thi Bui’s striking, evocative art, Phi’s expertly crafted prose reflects an immigrant family making its way in a new home while honoring its bonds to the past. October is National Bullying Prevention Month, providing a national spotlight on an important issue facing a reported one in five kids: bullying. PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center, the preeminent bullying prevention charity in the nation, is on a mission to drive social change that ends bullying. The organization works to put important resources in the hands of parents, educators and students alike, working to ensure that bullying is no longer an accepted childhood rite of passage. Today PACER and Clarisonic®, the creator of the #1 most-recommended skin-cleansing device by U.S. dermatologists*, announce a new partnership and campaign designed to drive awareness and raise donations for PACER’s bullying prevention efforts. For every #CleanTheMean social post shared on Facebook or Instagram this year, Clarisonic will donate $1 to PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center, up to $100,000.

This October, Red Gold is making it easy for people to give back when sharing their family meal. For any Red Gold canned tomato product purchased throughout the month, Red Gold will donate one meal* to help families facing hunger, with a goal of donating 2 million meals to Feeding America and its network of food banks. Whether it’s labeled Red Gold, Redpack, Tuttorosso or Huy Fong, consumers can simply buy a can, and help feed a family.
The philanthropic effort comes at a time when millions of American families struggle to put food on the table. According to recent data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), 1 in 8 Americans face hunger, including 13 million children. However, most families don’t recognize the extent of hunger in America; a Red Gold survey found that nearly 7 in 10 households were either unsure of the number of Americans struggling with hunger, or they severely underestimated the problem.

As entrepreneurs struggle to find desirable investments that also allow them to have an impact on the future of our country, Primrose Schools invites them to explore the benefits of opening a high-quality Primrose preschool in their communities. As the nation’s leading early education franchise company, Primrose currently has more than 350 locations in 29 states and is growing across the country.
Financial forecasters and economic developers alike point to early education as a stable investment that yields strong returns. A recent report by Child Care Aware shows that the high-quality early education industry generates a return of more than $8 for every $1 spent, meaning the returns of providing early education for children positively impact the economic development of communities and future workforce development. Last year, IBIS World reported that the industry reached a record high of $47.8 billion and is expected to continue to grow at an even faster pace than the overall child services market.

To motivate parents and their children to spend more time in nature together, the U.S. Forest Service and the Ad Council today launched a new public service advertisement (PSA) campaign urging families to experience the many wonders of nature close to home together.
The PSAs, created in partnership with The Foundry, Time Inc.’s state-of-the-art creative lab and content studio, focus on family time in nearby forested environments, reminding parents that having a nature experience with their children is not only easy and local, but also fun and full of learning opportunities and benefits. This is the first time that the Ad Council has worked with the creative division of a media company that has iconic roots in publishing on a large-scale production on behalf of one of its PSA campaigns. A range of Time Inc. properties are also donating print and digital advertising space in support of this campaign.

Quadratic equations, factorization, and imaginary numbers are all math concepts often learned in high school algebra. Now imagine determined fourth, fifth or sixth graders quietly working through these concepts on their own. This is exactly what you would see if you peeked into many Kumon Centers.
As a learning program based on ability, rather than age or grade, Kumon Instructors across North America are helping children learn without limits by inspiring them to reach heights they never imagined possible. It is common to see children in Kumon Centers studying math and/or reading material two to three years above their school grade level.

In an effort to improve outcomes for patients with some of the deadliest childhood cancers, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital scientists have created the world’s largest collection of pediatric solid tumor samples, drug-sensitivity data and related information and have made the resource available at no charge to the global scientific community.
St. Jude and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute collaborated to create the resource, known as the Childhood Solid Tumor Network. The work is reported today as an advance online publication in the scientific journal Nature.
“Survival rates for children with recurrent solid tumors have not improved significantly in more than 20 years and remain below 30 percent,” said corresponding author Michael Dyer, Ph.D., chair of the St. Jude Department of Developmental Neurobiology and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator. “This research will change that by promoting scientific collaboration to leverage the efforts of researchers worldwide to advance understanding and ultimately treatment of pediatric solid tumors.”
