In partnership with Men’s Health Network (MHN), Prostate Health Education Network (PHEN), ZERO – the End of Prostate Cancer and Joe Torre, four-time world champion baseball Hall-of-Famer and prostate cancer survivor, Genomic Health, Inc. (Nasdaq: GHDX) today launched Your Prostate Your Decision to educate prostate cancer patients and their loved ones that every man is different and every cancer is unique, and a genomic test can clarify the aggressiveness of one’s disease prior to invasive treatment. This first-of-its-kind national effort aims to address concerning results of a large national survey that found low general awareness about prostate cancer aggressiveness and treatment options, underscoring the need for better understanding of active surveillance as a treatment plan. “For a man with prostate cancer, a single decision can change his entire life,” said Mr. Torre, reflecting on his own experience with prostate cancer. “When I was diagnosed with prostate cancer, I faced a game-changing decision. While I chose surgery, a less aggressive approach called active surveillance might be the best choice.” To view the Multimedia News Release, go to: http://www.multivu.com/players/English/7322251-your-prostate-your-decision-joe-torre-talks-about-prostate-cancer-genomic-testing-treatment-options-psa/

On the eve of his 16th birthday, Greyson McCluskey from Indian Trail, North Carolina was named the national winner of Wouldn’t It Be Cool If…, a campaign jointly presented by Time Warner Cable’s philanthropic science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) initiative, Connect a Million Minds, and i.am FIRST, founded by artist, entertainer and entrepreneur will.i.am. The campaign challenged youth ages 10 – 15 to dream up the coolest idea to make their life, community or the world more awesome, and then to think about how science and math could help bring those ideas to life. Greyson McCluskey, an honor student and aspiring architect, developed his Baby Safe Rider – a mechanism for toddler car seats that would detect the onset of heightened temperatures in babies – as a way to address the rising incidents of vehicular Hyperthermia fatalities in the U.S. Greyson was inspired to create the Baby Safe Rider after the recent birth of his cousin. He entered the Wouldn’t It Be Cool If… contest after his mom saw a national public service announcement featuring will.i.am. Abbott announced today that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the Tecnis Symfony® Intraocular Lenses for the treatment of cataracts. The first in a new category of intraocular lenses (IOLs), the Tecnis Symfony lenses are the only lenses in the United States that provide a full range of continuous high-quality vision following cataract surgery, while also mitigating the effects of presbyopia by helping people focus on near objects. The FDA approval includes a version of the lens for people with astigmatism, the Tecnis Symfony Toric IOL. Cataracts are a common condition, with almost 4 million cataract surgeries performed each year, and that number is expected to increase.1 By age 80, more than half of all Americans either have a cataract or have had cataract surgery.2 However, cataracts do not just impact seniors. In 2016 it is estimated that nearly one in four cataract surgeries will be performed on people younger than 65.1 Many people who have cataracts experience other problems with their vision, such as presbyopia and astigmatism, which the Symfony lenses also address. Presbyopia, which affects most people over age 40, means people have lost the ability to focus on objects up close and often require glasses to perform near visual tasks. Astigmatism is when the cornea is misshapen, which causes blurry or distorted vision. To view the multimedia release go to: http://www.multivu.com/players/English/7870151-abbott-intraocular-lenses/

Adults aren’t the only ones who should be thinking heart smart this February, as heart disease is a concern for an increasing number of children, too. Research shows that overweight kids are more likely to develop heart disease as adults. And many overweight children already have conditions like high blood pressure and high cholesterol, which puts them at risk for heart disease now. The good news is that most kids can address these risks with changes in diet and exercise. Throughout February, which is American Heart Month, BeSmartBeWell.com highlights the heart risks facing overweight kids and provides advice for how to manage them. Building on the results of the largest behaviour change study on physical activity, Vitality and its global network of insurers have collectively committed to improving the health of millions over the next seven years. This is in line with the World Health Organizations’ Global Action Plan on Physical Activity, which aims to address the dramatic growth in lifestyle diseases, caused in part by a lack of exercise.
