A new survey from Alcon, the global leader in eye care and a division of Novartis, demonstrates that people experience significant emotional and lifestyle benefits after cataract surgery. Nearly three in four respondents who expressed an opinion agreed that after having the surgery, they were happier, more satisfied and had a greater appreciation for life. The survey also confirmed that life before surgery posed several daily challenges. A majority of survey respondents said cataracts made simple, day-to-day tasks harder, and made them feel annoyed, frustrated and old. In recognition of Cataract Awareness Month this June, Alcon conducted the MyCataracts survey with 1,300 US adults, age 60 and over, who have undergone cataract surgery, to better understand the emotional journey of the condition and the lifestyle benefits of treatment. The survey expands Alcon’s ongoing MyCataracts awareness campaign by uncovering insights that will help people make informed treatment decisions together with their doctors. Hunova, the first robotic gym for the rehabilitation and functional motor sense evaluation of lower limbs and trunk, has been officially launched in Genoa, Italy. The first 30 robots will be available from June in Europe and the USA. The technology was developed and patented at the IIT laboratories and has been launched on the market thanks to a 10 million euro investment from entrepreneur Sergio Dompè. Hunova is a programmable robotic medical device that allows professionals in the geriatrics, neurology and sport rehabilitation field to cure and predict many neurological and orthopedic conditions. There are two main competitive advantages of this technology: Hunova is able to collect a significant amount of data on biomechanics, constantly monitoring the patient’s progress. Secondly, it provides direct support to the patient through a guiding robotic system, offering a wide range of rehabilitation protocols in the form of video games. It consists of two electromechanical platforms equipped with sensors, characterized by two degrees of freedom (feet and seat level). The device integrates the force sensors to adjust the interaction with the patient and a wireless sensor, which is placed on the patient’s trunk, allowing the physiotherapist to check the movement of the torso. Today, the newly-developed Body Volume Indicator (BVI)™ was revealed as a modern day measure of body composition and weight distribution following a 10-year collaboration with Mayo Clinic experts who led extensive research on fat distribution, the importance of fat assessment and the limitations of the current standard of Body Mass Index (BMI). In conjunction with the development of BVI, BVI America LLC, a subsidiary of 3D measurement pioneer Select Research, announced the launch of the revolutionary BVI Pro tablet application, which will provide an easily accessible and affordable means for the professional community to use the new BVI measurement in everyday clinical use to assess health risks. The potential benefits of using Body Volume as a new indicator of risks were presented on April 27 by Mayo Clinic researchers, BVI America and the University of Westminster. It draws on 10 years of rigorous research, testing and validation using several potential Body Volume indices. Now BVI, calculated as a ratio between total volume and abdominal volume, can be used as a supplement to the current measurement standard of BMI, which is based solely on height and weight. BVI is considered to be a more precise means of estimating weight distribution and the fat around the organs, which is not visible to the human eye and can lead to serious health conditions, such as diabetes and heart disease. The medical and professional community at large is invited to contribute to the continued development of BVI by downloading and using the BVI Pro tablet application with their patients and clients; anonymous data collected will be analyzed by Mayo Clinic, whose research and validation of BVI will continue.
