Six Flags Over Georgia prepares to take to the sky as the countdown begins for the launch of the park’s newest thrill ride, SkyScreamer. The park’s newest addition was previewed today by media and VIP guests. SkyScreamer opens to the public on Friday, May 24, 2013.
At 242 feet, SkyScreamer is 40 feet taller than the park’s mega-coaster Goliath, and will give passengers a thrilling view of the Atlanta skyline. Thirty- two riders will sit two across in open air swings while spinning to the top of the tower. At full swing, guests revolve in a 98-foot circle at speeds of 40 mph.

The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), with help from The Boeing Company [NYSE: BA] and Iridium Communications Inc. [Nasdaq: IRDM], has successfully implemented a new space-based system to monitor Earth’s space environment. Known as the Active Magnetosphere and Planetary Electrodynamics Response Experiment (AMPERE), the system provides real-time magnetic field measurements using commercial satellites as part of a new observation network to forecast weather in space. This is the first step in developing a system that enables 24-hour tracking of Earth's response to supersonic blasts of plasma ejected from the sun at collection rates fast enough to one day enable forecasters to predict space weather effects.

On Thursday, December 15 at noon (ET), 24 Salvation Army volunteer bell ringers in cities across America will compete against one another in an attempt to set a world record for the longest continuous hand bell ringing by an individual. The contestants will seek to raise awareness for The Salvation Army’s 120th Red Kettle Campaign and support the Mission of The Salvation Army in serving people in need. Bell ringers will set an official Salvation Army record for 2011 when they surpass the 36 hour record set in 2010, and many hope to ring for as many as 60 hours.

Für Szenenapplaus sorgten die zwölf Fahrzeuge aus den norddeutschen Volkswagen Sammlungen. Auch die anderen Konzernmarken waren gebührend vertreten. Prominentester Copilot war zweifelsohne Ministerpräsident Stanislaw Tillich in einem Horch. Die Sachsen Classic zählt zu den gefragtesten Oldtimerrallyes in Deutschland. Lange Wartelisten zeugen vom zunehmenden Bewerberinteresse, was vor allem Streckenführung und Publikumsbegeisterung geschuldet ist. Das, was als Rollendes Museum schließlich auf die sächsischen Straßen gelangte, kann sich sehen lassen. Das gilt besonders für die Marken des Volkswagen Konzerns, die erneut prominent vertreten waren: Ein Drittel der insgesamt 180 Klassiker kam von den Konzern-Marken Audi, Bentley, Porsche, SKODA sowie Volkswagen Pkw und Volkswagen Nutzfahrzeuge. Der sächsische Ministerpräsident Stanislaw Tillich ließ es sich nicht nehmen, während der dritten Etappe als Copilot in einem Horch dabei zu sein. Die drei Rallyetage führten auf insgesamt 610 Kilometer über einige der schönsten Straßen des Freistaats. Highlights waren die „Steile Wand“ in Meerane, die am 22. Fahrer der insgesamt 14 Autos von Audi, DKW, Horch, Wanderer und NSU sowie die 20 teilnehmenden Volkswagen Klassiker durften sich wie zu Hause fühlen: Die einst in Sachsen beheimateten Marken der Auto Union hatten Weltgeltung erlangt, zwei ihrer Standorte – Zwickau und Chemnitz – waren Eckpfeiler der Rallye. Heute ist hier Volkswagen überaus präsent; in Sachsen entstehen Golf, Passat und Phaeton sowie Drei- und Vierzylindermotoren. Sie sind noch zu jung, um an einer Oldtimerrallye teilnehmen zu dürfen. Die Fahrzeuge aus dem Bestand von Volkswagen Classic zählen dagegen zwischen 20 und 60 Jahre. Lieblinge des Publikums waren die hierzulande bislang unbekannten Karmann Ghia aus brasilianischer Fertigung, die sich in diversen Details von den in Osnabrück gebauten Autos unterscheiden, sowie der „DDR-Golf“ von 1977, von dem 10.000 Einheiten nach Ostdeutschland gelangten und als begehrte Traumwagen gehandelt wurden. Dass heute Golf Variant und Phaeton exklusiv in Sachsen gefertigt werden, rundet die Historie auf eine einmalige Weise ab.

A cartoon character from a Buddhist temple in Beijing has been making waves online. But Xian’er the monk is no ordinary two-dimensional comic strip – he’s a walking, talking, 24-inch high robot who can chant, answer questions and interact with his surroundings.
Xian’er the robot monk is not the first high-tech solution to Buddhist teachings from Longquan Temple. The institution is staffed by monks who operate computers and smart phones along with their prayer beads and singing bowls. His creator, Master Xianfan joined the temple after graduating from China’s most prestigious art school – the Central Academy of Fine Arts
