The National WWII Museum today opened its newest permanent exhibit: Richard C. Adkerson & Freeport-McMoRan Foundation Road to Tokyo: Pacific Theater Galleries. Retracing the grueling trail that led from Pearl Harbor to Tokyo Bay, Road to Tokyo explores the evolving strategy for fighting relentless Japanese forces in Asia and the Pacific, examining cultural differences, logistical challenges and the staggering range of extreme conditions that confronted American military forces in Asia and the Pacific.
Along with Road to Tokyo, the Museum also opened a new exhibit on the US Merchant Marine. LTJG Ralph E. Crump Merchant Marine Gallery is a stand-alone gallery that honors the mariners who risked their lives transporting weapons, men and matériel to distant warfronts. Features include a video, artifacts, a model of a Liberty ship and an engaging array of personal narratives. The gallery is situated in the Solomon Victory Theater complex, at the end of the American Spirit Bridge – a new glass-and-metal bridge that connects the Museum’s Louisiana Memorial Pavilion with the rest of the six-acre campus for the first time.

The Light of Life Foundation, ThyCa: Thyroid Cancer Survivors’ Association, Inc., and Eisai Inc. today announced the launch of Myths and Truths About Thyroid Cancer, an interactive, educational campaign designed to help dispel the myth that thyroid cancer is a “good cancer.” Because most thyroid cancers can be successfully treated, many are told if you are going to get cancer, thyroid cancer is the one to have, which has led to this misperception. However, whether successfully treated or not, the truth is all cancers can have a significant impact on a person’s life, beginning with the shock and distress of hearing the word “cancer” at diagnosis. In honor of Thyroid Cancer Awareness Month and the tens of thousands who receive a thyroid cancer diagnosis each year, Myths and Truths About Thyroid Cancer illustrates the life-changing realities of this disease.
“As a thyroid cancer survivor, I urge people to stop referring to thyroid cancer as the ‘good cancer,’ as I believe it downplays patients’ experiences,” said Joan Shey, founder of the Light of Life Foundation. “I hear time and time again from patients how difficult their diagnosis and treatment were and that their scars are more than skin deep. More than 80,000 healthcare workers and their communities from across the country and around the world joined together in the Medline Pink Glove Dance for breast cancer online video competition. After a hard-fought dance battle, the online votes are in and Medline is pleased to name Geisinger Health System, Danville, Pa., as the winner. As a result, $25,000 will be donated to their charity of choice, the American Cancer Society, providing free transportation for treatment to central Pennsylvania breast cancer patients in need. Additionally, Medline and participating hospitals will donate another $1 million to the National Breast Cancer Foundation and various local breast cancer charities nationwide. More than $2.2 million has been donated through the campaign and Medline Foundation since 2005.

Miami Children's Health Foundation (MCH Foundation) celebrated its 10th Anniversary Diamond Ball on Oct. 29, raising nearly $1.6 million, benefiting the children and families at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital. More than 800 guests took part in the glamourous affair, which combined couture fashion and costumes inspired by the theme “Into the Woods.”
This year, world-renowned guitarist, singer, and composer José Feliciano was inducted into the Ambassador David M. Walters International Pediatric Hall of Fame. After receiving his award, Mr. Feliciano also entertained the crowd with a live performance. Mr. Feliciano was recognized for his commitment to helping children through the Jose M. and Susan L. Feliciano Charitable Foundation for Children and the Arts and for his achievements in the world of music as the first Latin artist to cross over into the English music market.
