It still pays to play nice at work, a new Robert Half survey confirms. Nearly half (48 percent) of workers interviewed said being courteous to others can help an employee rise through the ranks. Another 41 percent said etiquette plays at least some role in career advancement. Robert Half also has introduced new videos illustrating some of the most egregious examples of office etiquette faux pas as part of the firm’s ongoing video series, “Don’t Let This Happen to You.” The lighthearted videos, including “The Cupcake Caper,” along with advice on avoiding common blunders, can be found at www.roberthalf.com/dont-let-this-happen-to-you. When asked how they feel about mixing their work and personal lives, 58% of Generation Mobile workers feel guilty, according to new research from MobileIron. The MobileIron Gen M Survey, a global study of more than 3,500 full- and part-time professionals who use a mobile device for work, highlights an emerging demographic in the workplace: Generation Mobile or “Gen M.” The study found that Gen M, which is composed of mobile workers who are either men age 18-34 or people with children under age 18 in their households, relies more heavily on mobile technologies than the general population to mix their work and personal activities. Steelcase today launches Gesture, a new sitting experience, designed in response to the company’s latest research about changing postures in the workplace. The U.S. presidential campaign may be heating up, but it’s considerably cooler in the office, a new Robert Half survey suggests. Four in 10 (40 percent) workers interviewed characterized themselves as “occasional voters” when participating in office politics, limiting their involvement to issues that affect them directly. Another 39 percent said they are “neutral parties” who stay completely out of the fray. Although most employees report not being heavily involved in office politics, 56 percent have observed political maneuverings on the job. Chief among these activities is gossiping, cited by 54 percent of respondents, followed by flattering the boss to gain favor (20 percent) and taking credit for others’ work (17 percent). As Britain prepares for a summer of sport, Steve Backley, former javelin world record holder and Olympian turned business motivator and author, calls on British businesses to encourage competition, following two polls showing many embrace competition at work. The first report, carried out by The National Business Awards in partnership with Orange, shows that 65% of workers agree winning is important to them, with over two thirds believing healthy competition brings out the best in people and almost 40% acknowledging they enjoy a competitive environment at work. However, many employees say competitiveness is not encouraged in their workplace enough. Over 40% say being rewarded for their achievements at work encourages them to ‘up their game’, yet nearly 60% said they are not praised enough by bosses when they do well at work. Over half of the workers canvassed also said they would like to feel part of a winning business and would be proud if their place of work was recognised by winning an external award. For decades, students with full-time jobs, families at home or several years between credit hours were considered outliers, or “non-traditional students.” Today, however, they constitute nearly 75 percent of America’s undergraduate student body, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. This “New Majority” consists of working adults who are managing the demands of school, work and family life, and are looking at higher education with a different set of expectations and priorities. At schools like DeVry University, the New Majority students are finding the flexibility they need. Whether they’re looking for flexible course schedules, stackable certification programs or the ability to mix and match different modes of immersive learning, these students turn to DeVry University for degree programs and skill sets that can be immediately applied in the workplace.
