In the United States for 2014, about 62,900 new thyroid cancer cases will be diagnosed. Medullary thyroid cancer – a rare form of cancer located in the thyroid gland at the base of the throat – represents only about three to four percent of all thyroid cancers. Of those cases, just one third will be locally advanced or metastatic disease. With Thyroid Cancer Awareness Month in full swing, AstraZeneca has launched the aMTCSupport.com online resource center to provide information and support specifically designed for people living with advanced medullary thyroid cancer (aMTC) and their loved ones.

The full set of data from EUCLID, the largest ever prevalence study of Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) across Europe, were presented today at the 24th European Congress of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ECCMID). Data from 482 European hospitals reveal that in a single day, an average of 109 cases of CDI are missed due to a lack of clinical suspicion or inadequate laboratory testing, potentially leading to more than 39,000 missed cases in Europe each year.

An international coalition of cities is calling for an ambitious global goal to prevent more than 100 million new cases of diabetes by 2045. The target is set out alongside new research in a report launched today by the Cities Changing Diabetes partnership at a global summit in Houston, Texas. The report comes with the stark warning that achieving the goal requires cutting rates of obesity by a quarter.
