Lundi prochain, la Fondation L’Oréal, avec le soutien de L’Oréal France, la Commission française pour l’UNESCO et l’Académie des Sciences, récompensera 25 jeunes femmes scientifiques doctorantes. Elles ont été sélectionnées par un Jury présidé par Philippe Taquet, Président de l’Académie des sciences et composé de membres émérites de la communauté scientifique. Chacune d’entre elles a été distinguée pour la qualité et le fort potentiel de ses travaux de recherche. A l’occasion de la cérémonie de remise des Bourses L’Oréal France-UNESCO, ces jeunes femmes (26 ans en moyenne) recevront ainsi une bourse de 15 000 euros pour les soutenir dans leurs travaux et leur carrière scientifique, domaine où les femmes sont encore sous-représentées.

Millions of young people across the nation will become scientists for the day tomorrow, during the fifth annual 4-H National Youth Science Day (NYSD). This annual event seeks to spark an early youth interest in science education and future careers, and to reclaim the nation’s position of leadership in scientific exploration. As part of 4-H NYSD, youth will participate in the 4-H Eco-Bot Challenge: the 2012 National Science Experiment at hundreds of local events taking place in all 50 states. As part of an ongoing commitment to support life sciences innovators and the development of integrated, cross-sector solutions to prevent, intercept and cure diseases, Johnson & Johnson today named cell biologist Yoshinori Ohsumi, Ph.D., of the Tokyo Institute of Technology the winner of the 2016 Dr. Paul Janssen Award for Biomedical Research for his pioneering discoveries concerning the molecular basis of autophagy.
Dr. Ohsumi was honored today during an event at the 2016 BIO International Convention in San Francisco. A video of his acceptance comments can be viewed here.

The RCS Engineers Rocketry Team from Russellville, Ala., beat out 100 competitors to claim first place at the National Finals of the 2015 Team America Rocketry Challenge (TARC). After months of rocketry design, test flights and qualification launches, hundreds of students from across the country traveled to Great Meadow in the Plains, Va., to vie for the title of champion of the largest rocketry competition in the world.

Two Merck research scientists, Nancy A. Thornberry and Ann E. Weber, Ph.D., will receive the Discoverers Award, the highest honor from the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA), during a ceremony tonight at the Liberty Science Center in Jersey City, N.J.
They will be recognized for their leadership in the discovery of JANUVIA®, a once-daily pill that helps patients with type 2 diabetes control glucose in conjunction with diet and exercise. Though women have been part of teams honored with the Discoverers Award in the past, this is the first time in the award’s 24-year history that women alone have won.
