Today, Google revealed that the next version of its mobile operating system, Android, is named after the world’s favorite cookie – Android OREO. Historically, Google has named each successive Android release after sweet treats like Eclair, Ice Cream Sandwich and most recently, Nougat. The Android OREO release marks a global collaboration between the OREO brand and Google, which kicks off with the debut of the Android OREO superhero — a new character who personifies the powers of this iconic duo and the features of the new operating system.
Poised to be a pop-culture icon, the Android OREO superhero channels the playfulness of OREO and intelligence of Android to spread joy throughout the world. And, like all iconic superheroes, the Android OREO superhero originated from a wondrous, and unique, moment in time: the 2017 solar eclipse. Today, OREO – the world’s No. 1 cookie – launched the OREO Dunk Challenge, a global celebration of the brand’s iconic dunking ritual. The campaign kicks off in the U.S. and will roll out to more than 50 countries around the world as part of the OREO brand’s ongoing Wonderfilled movement. The OREO Dunk Challenge will feature a trio of high-profile dunkers, including International Recording Artist Christina Aguilera, Brazilian football star Neymar da Silva Santo, Jr. and Basketball Hall of Famer Shaquille “Shaq” O’Neal. Shaq and fans will do the first official dunks of the campaign today at the birthplace of the OREO cookie in New York City.
