Losing weight and being healthier are at the top of everyone’s New Year’s resolutions. But, despite the best intentions, work, kids, and social events often push lifestyle changes to the bottom of the list. While many are familiar with type 2 diabetes, fewer are aware of prediabetes, a serious health condition that affects 86 million Americans (more than 1 in 3) and often leads to type 2 diabetes. People with prediabetes have higher than normal blood glucose (sugar) levels, but not high enough yet to be diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. To raise awareness and help people with prediabetes know where they stand and how to prevent type 2 diabetes, the American Diabetes Association (ADA), the American Medical Association (AMA), and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have partnered with the Ad Council to launch the first national public service advertising (PSA) campaign about prediabetes. The PSA campaign, featuring first-of-its-kind communications techniques, was developed pro bono by Ogilvy & Mather New York for the Ad Council. Nearly 90 percent of people with prediabetes don’t know they have it and aren’t aware of the long-term risks to their health, including type 2 diabetes, heart attack, and stroke. Current trends suggest that, if not treated, 15 to 30 percent of people with prediabetes will develop type 2 diabetes within five years. The good news is that prediabetes often can be reversed through weight loss, diet changes and increased physical activity. Diagnosis is key: research shows that once people are aware of their condition, they are much more likely to make the necessary lifestyle changes. For decades, students with full-time jobs, families at home or several years between credit hours were considered outliers, or “non-traditional students.” Today, however, they constitute nearly 75 percent of America’s undergraduate student body, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. This “New Majority” consists of working adults who are managing the demands of school, work and family life, and are looking at higher education with a different set of expectations and priorities. At schools like DeVry University, the New Majority students are finding the flexibility they need. Whether they’re looking for flexible course schedules, stackable certification programs or the ability to mix and match different modes of immersive learning, these students turn to DeVry University for degree programs and skill sets that can be immediately applied in the workplace. University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences (USAHS), a leading graduate institution that emphasizes health and rehabilitative sciences education through innovative classroom education, is pleased to announce the installation of SafeGait 360° Balance and Mobility Trainer® on its Austin, Texas campus. The device, which was designed in collaboration with experts in physical therapy (PT) and occupational therapy (OT), works to mitigate the risk of injury from falls, protecting both the patient and therapist. In addition, SafeGait 360°’s dynamic fall protection (DFP) distinguishes between a patient’s intentional downward movement and when a patient is actually falling, which allows therapists to easily modify fall protection sensitivity to accommodate and challenge patients at varying stages of independence. USAHS is one of the first higher education institutions in the nation to install this innovative body-weight support and fall protection system. In addition to conducting ground breaking research with patients and students, faculty members with extensive experience in body-weight treatments aim to open a clinic which will provide new treatment options to patients in the Austin community, and will begin seeing patients in October of this year. As a private, family-led company, SC Johnson works hard to hold itself to a higher standard. Today, the company launched the next generation of its iconic “A Family Company” advertising, which aims to demonstrate this commitment and show that as a family company, SC Johnson cares as only a family company can. “Being a family company means we don’t need to worry about the expectations of Wall Street. We have the freedom to do the right thing for the long term,” said Fisk Johnson, Chairman and CEO, SC Johnson. “We care more, and we work hard to make sure our products are high quality, safe and healthy for the families who use them. We believe this ad campaign not only speaks to these values, but to the aspirations we share with families around the world.” As an integrated marketing campaign across television, digital and retail intended to celebrate the value family brings to people everywhere, this new campaign grew out of what SC Johnson knew to be consumers’ built-in trust of family-owned companies. In fact, when the company launched the first “A Family Company” in 2001, research showed that 80 percent of people believed family companies made products they could trust. This year, parents of nearly 16,000 children in the U.S. will hear the words: “Your child has cancer.” One in five of those children won’t survive. September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, and as a leader in the way the world understands, treats and defeats childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital® will focus on raising awareness and funds for this very important issue. Despite significant progress made by St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, which has helped push the overall childhood cancer survival rates from 20 to more than 80 percent since the hospital opened in 1962, cancer remains the leading cause of death by disease for children over the age of 1. Each year about 175,000 children are diagnosed with cancer worldwide, and 60 percent of these kids don’t have access to modern treatment. For those who win their battles against childhood cancer, victory often comes at a cost as survivors face a much higher risk of experiencing unique long-term health effects later in life. According to recent survey by Medicomp Systems, 43 percent of healthcare IT professionals and physicians cited that their top data-related challenge was not a lack of data but rather the struggle to access the right data at the right time. Those findings aren't surprising since the vast majority of health information systems today share a common design flaw: they don't think and work the way physicians do at the point of care. However, they are still deeply concerning. To deliver the best patient care, physicians need clinically relevant data that is seamlessly presented within their current workflows and integrated into the same workspace. The result is not only better patient care and better outcomes but also higher clinical effectiveness, efficiency, and satisfaction.
