On Friday, March 8, the seventh annual One Night for One Drop event at the “O” Theatre, presented by MGM Resorts International and COLGATE, drew a star-studded crowd in support of the one-night-only soirée benefiting the One Drop Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing access to safe water and sanitation around the globe. A Cigna Foundation grant to Achilles International will help determine whether running holds the key to better mental and physical development for children with autism. The Cigna Foundation today announced its $100,000 World of Difference grant to Achilles International, which has extensive anecdotal evidence showing that walking and running help people on the autism spectrum improve their emotional and physical health.

As the number of people living with Alzheimer’s disease soars, so does the number of family caregivers. Over 15 million people are taking care of loved ones with dementia in the home, according to the Alzheimer’s Association. Sixty percent say the emotional stress is high and more than a third report depression symptoms. To help, Brookdale is offering a free webinar for family caregivers during November, National Alzheimer’s Awareness Month. The company, America’s largest provider of dementia care, is also offering a web-based Alzheimer’s Resource Center and other expert information.

Thirty-six injured veterans with Wounded Warrior Project® (WWP) made it to the Flight 93 National Memorial on day six of their cross-country journey to raise awareness for veteran issues. Soldier Ride Across America commemorates the 15-year anniversary of Long Island native and veteran supporter Chris Carney’s historic coast-to-coast cycling venture in support of wounded warriors, which spurred the creation of WWP’s Soldier Ride® program.
“I’m honored to be able to represent my veteran brothers and sisters on this historic ride,” said Shonda Gloude-Jones, U.S. Army veteran and Soldier Ride Across America cyclist. “Being able to visit the 9/11 memorials in New York City; the Pentagon; and Somerset County, Pennsylvania, has taken a larger emotional toll on me and the other warriors than any of the physical aspects of this journey.”

The International Nut and Dried Fruit Council (INC) has celebrated the XXXV World Nut and Dried Fruit Congress in San Diego. From May 30th until today, more than 1,400 delegates have participated in the only and largest international event dedicated to the nut and dried fruit industry that this year’s edition has broken previous records of attendance.
The INC Congress featured a stimulating three-day program to exchange knowledge, ideas and experiences. Attendees had over 16 sessions, among round tables, seminars and keynote speakers’ presentations ranging in topics from market dynamics, crops and production forecasts, agricultural and water resources, new findings in health and nutrition, and product innovations.
Steve Junqueiro, Co-president and COO of Save Mart Supermarkets, shared his vision on the future of American supermarkets. He outlined a market featured by a more digital consumer driven by food transparency, convenience, connectivity, emotional connection and local and sustainable supply.

On January 12, 2010, a devastating earthquake hit Haiti, killing more than 230,000 people and displacing approximately 1.5 million. Children were orphaned; families were left homeless; and homes, schools and hospitals destroyed. Five years later, SOS Children’s Villages, the world’s largest organization providing care for orphaned and abandoned children, remains unwavering in its ongoing, long-term commitment to the people of Haiti.
“Efforts to rebuild the most affected areas move at a slow place, and the need to support vulnerable children and families remains high. This Sunday, June 19th, as we celebrate fathers across the nation, new research finds that contemporary norms of fatherhood emphasize men’s involvement with their children in addition to the traditional role of financial provider. Further, the number of hours that fathers work is not strongly related to fathers’ involvement with their children. Rather, “new fathers” appear to be cutting back on, or incorporating their children into, their leisure time.
“Over the past two decades, fathers have become more involved in all aspects of their children’s lives,” says Kenneth Braswell, National Responsible Fatherhood Clearinghouse (NRFC) Director. “Fathers continue to feel strongly about providing for their children while taking a more active role in other key activities such as meal preparation, bathing, and bedtime routines.”
Further, the Pew Research Center notes that six-in-ten Americans (58 percent) say it is “extremely important” for a father to provide values and morals to his children and roughly half say it is extremely important for a dad to provide emotional support (52 percent).
