A recent Harris Interactive survey on the attitudes of the American public towards healthcare acquired infections (HAIs) revealed that almost one quarter (24%) of U.S. adults or someone they know have had an infection as a result of a stay in a hospital; and that 37% are most concerned about the spread of germs and bacteria in hospitals, as compared to other public places.
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC), nearly 2 million people acquire infections while in U.S. hospitals each year; and almost 100,000 die as a result.

In the wake of recent tragedy, the Newtown community came together to show the nation the true meaning of “Newtown strong.” It was inspiring to see such overwhelming support for a small, quiet town in the face of such extreme adversity.
The Strides for Sandy Hook 5k memorial run/walk was created as a way for local residents to continue the healing process. The 5k took place on Saturday, January 19, 2013. The unofficial community run honored the lives of victims lost in the December 14, 2012 tragedy. While there was a suggested donation of $25 for participants, any amount was accepted—no matter how big or small. Strides for Sandy Hook attracted nearly 200 walkers and runners and raised over $3,600 on January 19 alone. All donations and proceeds were given towards a memorial fund established by Newtown Parks and Recreation, the Newtown Park Gift Fund.

A new study from Robert Half and Financial Executives Research Foundation (FERF), the research affiliate of Financial Executives International (FEI), provides insight into professional standards across the finance function, including the average size of finance departments, hours worked and technologies used. The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) and Teva Respiratory released results today from a new survey which showed that more than half (59 percent) of nasal allergy sufferers polled reported sleep issues as a result of their allergy symptoms, yet only 35 percent proactively treat their nasal allergy symptoms. Furthermore, nearly half of those surveyed (48 percent) said their nasal allergy symptoms, such as nasal congestion and sneezing, also interrupted their partner’s sleep.

CEO Sheri McCoy announced that four global organizations and one government campaign have received 2nd Avon Communications Awards: Speaking Out About Violence Against Women for their outstanding work to bring attention to the need to end violence against women. To promote the adoption of teenagers from foster care, the Administration for Children and Families (ACF), AdoptUSKids and the Ad Council are unveiling a new series of multimedia public service advertisements (PSAs). Today, more than 33,000 teenagers await adoption from the U.S. foster care system. Nearly 50 percent (14,000) are between the ages of 14 and 16.
These new PSAs are part of the Adoption from Foster Care campaign launched in 2004. Since the launch of the campaign more than 15,000 children have been placed with a permanent family.

Americans have a bit of a superiority complex when it comes to grading their financial prowess. Genworth’s latest Psychology of Financial Planning research reveals that more than half (52%) of Americans gave themselves an A or B grade on their saving and investing knowledge, while giving the average American a failing grade of D. What nearly everyone (97%) can agree on, however, is the importance of financial literacy and the fact that they don’t have enough (88%). In fact, 58 percent of respondents blamed lack of financial education as a top reason why pre-retirees don’t have enough money saved for retirement.

Nearly six of ten Americans will develop kidney disease in their lifetime, according to a new analysis published in the American Journal of Kidney Diseases. In comparison, lifetime risk of diabetes, heart attack and invasive cancer is approximately four in ten.
As a result of this and previous studies, the National Kidney Foundation is calling on healthcare professionals to screen patients in specific high-risk groups for kidney disease – those age 60 or older and those with high blood pressure or diabetes – by adding a simple urine albumin test for kidney damage to annual physical examinations.

Nearly 26 million Americans have diabetes, which can affect numerous parts of the body, including your teeth and gums.
Of the 26 million people who have diabetes, an estimated 7 million have no idea that they have the disease, according to the American Diabetes Association.
