Abbott and the United States Department of Defense today announced a collaboration with the intent to develop portable blood tests to help evaluate potential concussions, also called mild traumatic brain injuries (TBIs). As part of a multi–phased approach, the tests would be developed for Abbott’s i–STAT® System, a handheld, diagnostic analyzer that is currently used for other point-of-care testing, including among military service members. Concussions are a significant health concern for military service members.1 With the development of new tests, physicians could use the information to positively impact the care of people with a suspected concussion. Until recently, cancer patients looking for the most precise form of proton radiation therapy – “pencil-beam scanning” – had to narrow their search to about a half dozen centers in the United States that offer this treatment on a limited basis. Today’s opening of the Scripps Proton Therapy Center in San Diego, Calif., marks the first time that a proton center in the United States is treating patients exclusively with this ultra-accurate technology, in every treatment room. Almost every market around the world is shrinking at the moment, and so is the medical sector. According to the Federal Statistics Office in the first half of 2009 the German exports were down 2.5 percent, the largest market for exports still remains the United States. However the import market in Germany has managed to become stronger. The statisticians have recorded a 6 per cent gain in imports especially from the USA, Switzerland and Japan. Germany is therefore a highly competitive market in the global medical industry - the medical trade fair MEDICA in Duesseldorf has become the most important platform for manufacturers and customers.

Kidde’s new Worry-Free line of smoke alarms with a 10-year sealed-in lithium battery aims to solve common consumer complaints and pressing fire industry concerns.
