The Epilepsy Foundation’s National Epilepsy Awareness Month gets a boost from Paramount Pictures and JJ Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions with a red carpet affair and after party for Morning Glory, starring Harrison Ford, Diane Keaton, and Rachel McAdams.
The event benefits TalkAboutIt.org, created by Greg Grunberg (star of the upcoming NBC series ‘LOVE BITES’) in collaboration with the Epilepsy Foundation. Grunberg, the father of a child with epilepsy, and chair of the National Walk for Epilepsy since its inception, joins the Foundation to educate people about seizures, including the proper first aid of never putting anything in the mouth of someone having a seizure.

The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) has begun enrollment for the first Phase I safety study approved by the Food and Drug Administration to investigate the use of a child’s own umbilical cord blood stem cells for traumatic brain injury in children. The study is being performed in conjunction with Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital, UTHealth’s primary children’s teaching hospital.

With the U.S. Open Snowboarding finals this weekend, Olympic snowboarding champion Hannah Teter teams up with other professional athletes to fight child poverty through Children International, a U.S.-based humanitarian organization.

Bill Gates, co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, called on government leaders to increase their investments in vaccines and to hold themselves accountable for extending the benefits of vaccines to every child.
In a keynote address at the 64th World Health Assembly, an annual gathering of health ministers and global health leaders, Gates laid out his vision for the impact that broadening access to vaccines can have on the world. “Strong immunization systems will put an end to polio and help us reach all children with five to six new vaccines,” Gates said. “We can save four million lives by 2015, and 10 million lives by 2020.”
