According to State Farm® claims data, more cooking fires occur on Thanksgiving than any other day of the year. In fact, grease and cooking-related claims more than double on Thanksgiving Day compared to an average day in November.
With the popularity of turkey frying, people are at risk for fryer related fires and injuries. U.S. fire departments are responding to more than 1,000 fires each year in which a deep fryer is involved. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) says deep fryer fires result in more than $15 million in property damage each year and hot oil splatter can cause serious burns to an adult or life threatening injuries to a child.

The number of safety incidents at processing plants has increased as the nation’s refineries have aged. During the first two weeks of 2013, a total of 27 process safety incidents, including fires, leaks and fugitive emissions were reported at U.S. refineries. This incident rate could climb even higher as the U.S. is expected to be the world’s top oil producer by 2017 and plants are pushed even harder. Sadly, the probability of World War 3 in our lifetime is greater than the odds that peace will come to the Middle East, or Iraq, or Syria, or any of these other flashpoint regions. Keep an eye on these conflicts, because when any one of them heats up, so too do oil and gold prices.
Thankfully, there are far more reasons to avoid war than to engage in it. Nevertheless, WW3 will happen when all those who were affected by WW2 are gone. Until then, there will be numerous spikes in gold and oil prices, each time global tensions rise.
