The Amgen Foundation today announced $2.5 million in new grants for the Amgen Biotech Experience, an innovative science education program, bringing the total committed to nearly $8 million since the program’s inception in 1990. The Amgen Biotech Experience provides a real-world biotech lab experience to middle and high schools in Amgen’s U.S. and United Kingdom (U.K.) communities and will engage more than 50,000 students this year. Education Development Center, Inc. (EDC), a global nonprofit organization that creates learning opportunities around the world, has also been named Program Office to oversee the program’s implementation and facilitate its continued development.

According to a new AARP poll1, almost three out of ten people who are caring for a loved one say their life has changed since becoming a caregiver. More than one in five says their weight, exercise, or social life has suffered.
To illustrate the complexity and help the 42 million sons and daughters, friends and spouses caring for parents and loved ones see themselves as caregivers, AARP and the Ad Council are unveiling a new suite of Public Service Advertisements (PSAs) as part of their Caregiver Assistance campaign. More than half (53 percent) of family members serving as primary caregivers for loved ones have lost income due to the demands of providing care. The study, Beyond Dollars: A Way Forward, also found that caregivers whose loved ones did not have long term care insurance face additional stresses including covering the cost of daily living, medical and other support-type needs.

When Hurricane Sandy ravaged the East Coast last October, it not only left thousands of miles of devastation, but it also uprooted the lives of all in its path – including millions of pets.
