The Department of Veterans Affairs will commemorate this year’s National VA Research Week from April 23 to 27. The theme, “Caring for Veterans Through Discovery & Collaboration,” will celebrate the contributions of Veterans who participate in VA research studies, as well as the accomplishments of VA investigators and their collaborators.

The View’s Elisabeth Hasselbeck hosted the ninth-annual More Magazine/Fitness Magazine Women’s Half-Marathon in Central Park on Sunday, April 15. More than 7,200 women participated in the race—the largest women’s-only half-marathon in the country—established by More and Fitness magazines, in partnership with New York Road Runners. Hasselbeck participated in the race for the second straight year, besting her 2011 time by more than four minutes and finishing in 1:40:05. She ran in support of Team NoGii to raise money for Celiac Disease research, as well as Team Red, White and Blue, to support America’s war veterans.

As Americans honor those who serve our country this Veterans Day, Colorado Technical University (CTU) is recognizing the sacrifices of 25 wounded active duty and veteran service members and 25 spouses of wounded service members with the gift of education.
CTU today announced the 50 recipients of the fifth annual 2013 CTU Wounded Warrior Scholarship and Wounded Warrior Spouse Scholarship programs. The scholarships cover the full cost of tuition, course materials and fees, as well as a new laptop computer.

Upon leaving the military, many veterans—especially those who have been injured—anticipate their earned benefits to begin automatically. That is not the case. Veterans must apply for their benefits, and awards are not automatic. In fact, the Veterans Affairs (VA) claims-processing delays recently hit a 20-year high, with the average claim taking 262 days to be processed. Each day that veterans’ claims languish means another day that they do not receive the benefits they need in order to care for themselves and their families.

According to Department of Defense statistics, hearing loss is the number one war-related injury affecting veterans from the battlefields of Iraq and Afghanistan. An estimated 60 percent of veterans returning from Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) and Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) have some hearing damage, with 840,000 suffering from tinnitus and just over 700,000 suffering from hearing loss. More than 1.2 million veterans from every generation suffer from some form of hearing loss.

Eagle Rare Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey has named Hershel “Woody” Williams of Ona, West Virginia, as the Grand Prize winner of the 2016 Rare Life Award. Eagle Rare will donate $50,000 to Williams’ charity, the Hershel “Woody” Williams Medal of Honor Foundation, and host an awards ceremony in Lexington, Kentucky on February 27, 2016.
