Welcome to Zimbabwe. We’re in the nation’s capital, Harare. And this is Rufaro Stadium. The Zimbabwean finals of the Volkswagen Junior Masters recently took place here. The Volkswagen Junior Masters is a global football development tournament that culminates in May when teams from twenty countries will participate in the world finals, to be held at the famed Bernabeaú Stadium in Madrid, Spain. Zimbabwe’s national team failed to qualify for the upcoming FIFA World Cup in neighboring South Africa but hopes are high that Zimbabwe’s junior players will perform well in Spain.
When the Football World Cup begins in South Africa in June 2010, many thousands of boys aged between ten and twelve will have already finished competing in their own World Cup. The Volkswagen Junior World Masters is a worldwide tournament series which is held in Brazil, Mexico, the USA, Russia, South Africa and Germany, amongst other countries. In May, the winning teams will compete in a final tournament at the famous Bernabe� Stadium in Madrid.
The American leg of the Volkswagen Junior Masters resulted in a fiercely contested victory for the New Jersey based team, PDA Pele. Comprised of under-thirteens from a diverse array of cultural backgrounds, the young team is now busy preparing to represent America in world finals in May.
