For the 22,000 children who attend diabetes camp each year, feelings of isolation that may accompany type 1 diabetes can be overcome by fun experiences and new friends who say, “you are not alone.” Lilly Diabetes understands the importance of the diabetes camp experience for those taking the first steps toward self-management and increased self-confidence. For more than 15 years, Lilly has been at the forefront of support with its Camp Care Package program. This year, Lilly’s diabetes ambassadors, all of whom have type 1 diabetes, will attend camps and share their stories starting July 4 at the Children with Diabetes® Friends for Life® conference.

Living with type 1 diabetes comes with many unique challenges in all stages of life. For parents of children with the condition, financial, medical and emotional worries can be overwhelming. To help support people with diabetes and those who love them, Lilly Diabetes today announced it will donate $94,000 to the American Diabetes Association (Association) Campership program and $100,000 to the Diabetes Scholars Foundation (Foundation).

In the lead-up to Lung Cancer Awareness Month this November, the ‘future face’ of women’s cancer is being revealed. While new data published last month by Cancer Research UK suggests the number of women dying from breast cancer in the UK is in decline – expected to drop almost 30 percent by 2030 – the number of women dying from lung cancer is on the increase.
Liz Darlison, Macmillan Consultant Nurse Specialist, University Hospitals of Leicester, says, “While the statistics paint a frightening picture, there’s a great deal that can be done to help ensure women are diagnosed earlier, treated earlier and live longer. By raising awareness of the tell-tale signs – for example, a persistent cough that lasts longer than three weeks – there’s the potential to save thousands of lives every year.”

Relentless in his lifelong devotion to the elephants' survival, Save the Elephants founder Iain Douglas-Hamilton, Ph.D., has been named the 2010 recipient of the Indianapolis Prize, the world's leading award for animal conservation. In recognition for his lifetime achievements, Dr. Douglas-Hamilton will receive $100,000 and the Lilly Medal at a gala ceremony presented by Cummins Inc. on Sept. 25, 2010, at The Westin Hotel in Indianapolis.
