A new survey from the nonprofit Gout & Uric Acid Education Society (GUAES) highlights an alarming awareness gap among Americans regarding the risk factors for gout, a chronic, potentially disabling form of arthritis which now affects an estimated 8.3 million Americans. Among the survey findings are that only one in 10 Americans correctly cited cardiovascular disease as a risk factor for gout, while only one in three Americans correctly reported that obesity is a risk factor, and less than one in five reported that diabetes and kidney disease are risk factors. GUAES released the survey findings in advance of its annual Gout Awareness Day on May 22.

GIVE HEALTH partners with the non-profit P&G Children’s Safe Drinking Water Program (CSDW) to provide PUR packets in developing countries. These packets, developed by P&G and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, use some of the same ingredients as municipal water systems to remove pollutants from contaminated water. Since 2004, CSDW has provided more than 3 billion liters of water to children in need in over 60 countries.

A new survey finds a record number of Americans have lost confidence in their ability to afford retirement.
The 2011 Retirement Confidence Survey, released today by the nonpartisan Employee Benefit Research Institute (EBRI) in Washington, and co-sponsored by the Principal Financial Group®, found more than a quarter of workers (27 percent)—the most ever in the two decades of the survey—now say they are “not at all confident” about having enough money to live comfortably in retirement.
