St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is naming the institution’s principal research tower after Donald Pinkel, M.D., whose legacy of driving progress toward advancing cures for pediatric catastrophic diseases continues at the institution today.
When St. Jude was established 55 years ago, Pinkel, the hospital’s first medical director, committed to finding cures for childhood cancer, leading to groundbreaking treatments that saved countless children’s lives. Many of these cancers were deemed incurable prior to Pinkel’s research, but his distinct approach to eradicating diseases established a model for how cancers could be treated.

The highly anticipated Lucky Dragon Hotel & Casino, the first in Las Vegas to offer an authentic Asian gaming, dining and lifestyle experience, is now open to the public. The property commemorated the milestone with a Grand Opening Celebration held on Saturday, Dec. 3.
The celebration began at 2:30 p.m. PT as the booming sound of taiko drummers called Lucky Dragon guests out to the porte-cochere where the festivities took place. After a half-hour demonstration, the executive team from Lucky Dragon joined the celebration for the traditional dragon and lion eye-opening ceremony and dragon and lion dances. President and Chief Executive Officer Andrew Fonfa, Managing Principal James Weidner, Chief Operating Officer Dave Jacoby, General Manager Matt Harkness, Vice President of Marketing Jordan Seager and Executive Chef Phuoc Luu were all present to make traditional red envelope offerings to the Lions, symbolizing good fortune to come. After only 16 weeks of existence, foetuses hear and respond to music as long as it is emitted from their mother’s vagina. Foetuses respond to this stimulus by opening their mouths and pulling their tongues out as far as possible, making vocalisation movements – prior to the acquisition of language.
This is the main conclusion of the study conducted by the team of Institut Marquès, which boasts the collaboration of Alberto Prats, Professor of Anatomy and Human Embryology of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Barcelona.
The study, entitled “Foetal facial expression in response to intravaginal music emission”, is published this week in the journal Ultrasound of the British Medical Ultrasound Society (BMUS).
According to Dr. Marisa López-Teijón, the Head of Assisted Reproduction at Institut Marquès and the principal researcher and author of the clinical study: “We have discovered that the formula for foetuses to hear like us is to emit music from the mother’s vagina. They barely hear the sound that reaches them through their mother’s abdomen: the soft tissues of the abdomen and the inside of the mother’s body absorb the soundwaves”.

Chiasma, Inc., a U.S. privately–held biopharma company developing octreotide capsules for the orphan condition acromegaly, today announced two new studies presented at the 97th Endocrine Society (ENDO) Annual Meeting in San Diego, Calif. The studies provide additional data from Chiasma’s Phase III trial and new findings on the patient burden of current injection therapies.
“We now have data to help clinicians determine whether octreotide capsules, if approved, are likely to help their patient with acromegaly maintain response,” said Shlomo Melmed, M.D., senior vice president and dean, Cedars–Sinai Medical Center, Los Angeles and global study principal investigator. “Furthermore, the Phase III results show the safety and efficacy of octreotide capsules can be reliably determined within 12 weeks of initiating therapy.”
