Wer seinen Kompaktwagen demnächst auf fabrikneue Sommerreifen umrüstet, kann sich ruhigen Gewissens auch für eine etwas größere Dimension entscheiden. Das gilt jedenfalls für die elf handelsüblichen Sommerreifen der Größe 225/45 R 17, die die GTÜ Gesellschaft für Technische Überwachung im Fahrbetrieb praktisch getestet hat. Diese Reifen sind ohne Ausnahme unterm Strich entweder empfehlenswert (7) oder sehr empfehlenswert (4). Dabei begutachteten die GTÜ-Experten gemeinsam mit den Testern des ACE Auto Club Europa die Reifeneigenschaften auf dem Gebiet Sicherheit etwa bei nasser und trockener Fahrbahn sowie in den Bereichen Umwelt und Wirtschaftlichkeit. Dabei überzeugten die Breitreifen fast durch die Bank mit hohen Sicherheitsreserven selbst auf nasser Straße. Bewertet wurden die Fabrikate in insgesamt zwölf einzelnen Kategorien. Aus der Prüfung von GTÜ und ACE ging der Conti SportContact 5 mit 143 von 190 erreichbaren Punkten als Testsieger hervor. Der Preis für einen Vierer-Satz dieser Reifen ist mit einem vom Bundesverband Reifenhandel ermittelten Durchschnittspreis von 556 Euro von allen getesteten Mitbewerbern allerdings auch am höchsten (siehe Ergebnistabelle). Vom Einkaufspreis her betrachtet am günstigsten ist der Apollo Aspire 4GXL (119 von 190 Punkten/empfehlenswert), bei dem der Reifensatz lediglich um die 400 Euro kostet.
Lustgarten Foundation funded researchers at the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins have designed a multi-analyte blood test that can detect the presence of pancreatic cancer as part of a panel of eight common cancers (pancreas, ovary, liver, stomach, esophagus, colorectum, lung and breast) as reported in the online edition of Science today. The test utilizes combined assays for genetic alterations and protein biomarkers and has the capacity not only to identify the presence of relatively early cancer, but also to localize the organ of origin of these cancers.
“The potential this has for pancreatic cancer is unprecedented,” says Anne Marie Lennon, M.D., Ph.D., Associate Professor of Medicine, Director, Pancreatic Cyst Center of the Ludwig Center at the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center. “We know that in 80-85 percent of pancreatic cancer cases, it’s detected too late, leaving the patient with few options. Developing a blood screening test for pancreatic cancer has been an urgent goal, because catching the disease early will be the way we get to long-term survival.”

Exact Sciences Corp. (NASDAQ: EXAS) announced today that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Cologuard, the company’s noninvasive, stool DNA colorectal cancer screening test. Cologuard is the first noninvasive screening test for colorectal cancer that analyzes both stool DNA and blood biomarkers and has been proven to find 92 percent of cancers and 69 percent of the most advanced precancerous polyps in average risk patients. Cologuard, which is available through healthcare providers, offers people 50 and older at average risk for colorectal cancer an easy–to–use screening test they can do in the privacy of their own home.

The RCS Engineers Rocketry Team from Russellville, Ala., beat out 100 competitors to claim first place at the National Finals of the 2015 Team America Rocketry Challenge (TARC). After months of rocketry design, test flights and qualification launches, hundreds of students from across the country traveled to Great Meadow in the Plains, Va., to vie for the title of champion of the largest rocketry competition in the world.

Just over half of 2018 model vehicles evaluated by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety are available with headlights that do an adequate job of lighting the road at night and limiting glare for oncoming drivers, but most good-rated headlights are optional or bundled with other features that can raise the price of the vehicle.
Since IIHS released its first headlight ratings for passenger vehicles in 2016, most manufacturers have focused on improving this key safety component. That year, only 2 of 95 headlight systems on 2016-model vehicles evaluated earned a good rating.
For the 2018 model year, the best-available headlights on 32 of 165 models evaluated earn the highest rating of good, and the best-available headlights on 58 models earn the second-highest rating of acceptable. Thirty-two models have only marginal-rated headlights, while poor-rated headlights are the only ones available for 43 models.

Die beste Waschstraße heißt „Soft Wash Park“ und ist in Magdeburg. Diese Anlage schneidet mit der Gesamtnote „sehr gut“ (1,5) ab. Im Durchschnitt bekommen die Waschstraßen die Note „gut“. Die Portalanlagen - ein „Tor“ mit Waschelementen fährt bei dieser Art der Säuberung über das stehende Fahrzeug und zurück - kommen nur auf einen Notenschnitt von 3,6, sind also nur „ausreichend“. Weder eine Portalwaschanlage (66 wurden getestet), noch eine der 84 geprüften Waschstraßen fällt im Test durch. Allerdings ist auch keine Portalanlage dabei, die ein „gut“ oder „sehr gut“ schafft. Die wichtigste Testkategorie ist die „Waschleistung“.

An additional 17 earn TOP SAFETY PICK by meeting the crashworthiness criteria alone.
IIHS is using new criteria for the awards this year. TOP SAFETY PICK requires good performance in the Institute's moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint tests and, for the first time, good or acceptable performance in the small overlap front test introduced in 2012. The same level of performance in those tests, along with at least a basic rating for front crash prevention, is required for the higher accolade, TOP SAFETY PICK+.
Renault Zoe. Renault has managed to increase the Zoe's range with an impressive 41-kWh battery, called the R90, that gives an official NEDC range of 403 kilometers (250 miles). Sure, the NEDC range is a optimistic fiction concocted by European regulators – something that even Renault admits – but the new Zoe's real-world range should be around 200 km (124 miles) in the winter and 300 km (186 miles) in the summer. Compared to the first-gen Zoe's 250 km (155 mile) NEDC range, this is a tremendous improvement.

Ansonsten gab sich der Allradler bewusst bodenständig und glänzte – typisch für Skoda eben – mit hohem Nutzwert. Eine Grundeigenschaft, die bei dem jetzt grundlegend überarbeiteten Modell natürlich beibehalten wurde. Der fast kantig modellierte Yeti dürfte zwar trotz neuer Front und neuem Heck nach wie vor keinen renommierten Designer-Auto-Preis erringen, wirkt jedoch auch dank der neuen Leuchtengrafik und stärker ausgeformter Radhäuser freundlich und dynamisch. Die unterhalb der Front, an den Seiten und am Heck angebrachte Kunststoffverkleidung, die das Blech vor Beschädigungen beim Ausritt ins Gelände schützt, erzeugt zudem Off Road-Look, ohne übertrieben zu wirken. Die erstmals angebotene Outdoor-Variante unterscheidet sich dabei gegenüber dem Stadt-Yeti dadurch, dass diese Teile in schwarz gehalten sind. Das sieht nicht nur urig aus.
