Adults have gotten the message that it’s safer for kids to ride in the back seat properly restrained, but when it comes to their own safety, there is a common misperception that buckling up is optional. Among adults who admit to not always using safety belts in the back seat, 4 out of 5 surveyed by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety say short trips or traveling by taxi or ride-hailing service are times they don’t bother to use the belt. The new survey reveals that many rear-seat passengers don’t think belts are necessary because they perceive the back seat to be safer than the front. This shows a clear misunderstanding about why belts are important, no matter where a person sits in a vehicle. Before the majority of Americans got into the habit of buckling up, the back seat was the safest place to sit, and the center rear seat was the safest place of all in 1960-70s’ era vehicles. In recent decades, high levels of restraint use, the advent of belt pretensioners, load limiters and airbags, plus crashworthy vehicle designs have narrowed the safety advantages of riding in the rear seat for teens and adults.

As sustainability becomes an increasingly important topic in the textile industry, so does the research that helps us better understand how end consumers think about sustainability. Cotton Incorporated and Cotton Council International (CCI) conducted a global survey of attitudes, motivations, and behaviors regarding sustainability among 7,300 consumers in the U.S., U.K., Mexico, India, Italy, and China. Questions explored how consumers define sustainability, what actions they take to improve the environment, when and how sustainability affects their purchases, and why they are motivated to act in sustainable ways. This research reveals the ways in which environmental concerns are important to consumer decision-making. A whopping 80 percent of enterprises are investing today in AI, but one in three business leaders believe their company will need to invest more over the next 36 months to keep pace with competitors. Most of us are living in a city. Actually we do not have much time to walk around the city. However, the cities are changing now. “Walkable Urbanism” has been emerging as a new global standard for urban development. There was a time when wide roads and fast traffic were regarded as key elements to determine a city’s competitiveness. But today, how much the city provides safe and comfortable walking environment is becoming more important. Urban planners from many cities including Copenhagen, London, Paris and Barcelona prioritize pedestrians, and develop diverse ideas about how to make a walkable city. Seoul is also in line with these global efforts. As the capital of Korea, Seoul has developed and implemented policies to create more pedestrian roads and to make urban regeneration through this. International research led by University College London (UCL) as part of the ‘Cities Changing Diabetes’ partnership programme challenges current scientific understanding of the rapid rise of diabetes in cities. The findings suggest that in cities around the world, social and cultural factors play a far more important role in the spread of the epidemic than previously thought. More than two thirds of the world’s 400 million people with diabetes live in urban areas.1,2 The year-long study for Cities Changing Diabetes, a unique public-private-academic partnership, sought to better understand what makes people vulnerable to type 2 diabetes in cities in order to inform solutions for one of the most pressing modern-day public health challenges. To explore this complex issue, more than 550 interviews were undertaken with at-risk and diagnosed people in five major cities – Copenhagen, Houston, Mexico City, Shanghai and Tianjin. “By largely focusing on biomedical risk factors for diabetes, traditional research has not adequately accounted for the impact of social and cultural drivers of disease,” says David Napier, Professor of Medical Anthropology, UCL. “Our pioneering research will enable cities worldwide to help populations adapt to lifestyles that make them less vulnerable to diabetes.” To view the multimedia release go to: http://www.multivu.com/players/English/7690951-study-rethink-rise-diabetes-in-cities/
