Thirty-six injured veterans with Wounded Warrior Project® (WWP) made it to the Flight 93 National Memorial on day six of their cross-country journey to raise awareness for veteran issues. Soldier Ride Across America commemorates the 15-year anniversary of Long Island native and veteran supporter Chris Carney’s historic coast-to-coast cycling venture in support of wounded warriors, which spurred the creation of WWP’s Soldier Ride® program.
“I’m honored to be able to represent my veteran brothers and sisters on this historic ride,” said Shonda Gloude-Jones, U.S. Army veteran and Soldier Ride Across America cyclist. “Being able to visit the 9/11 memorials in New York City; the Pentagon; and Somerset County, Pennsylvania, has taken a larger emotional toll on me and the other warriors than any of the physical aspects of this journey.”

An international team of researchers led by Gerard D. Schellenberg, PhD, a member of the CurePSP Genetics Consortium and professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine in the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, has identified three new genes that can increase the risk of people developing Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP).
PSP is a rare neurodegenerative brain disease, similar to Parkinson’s disease, which causes severe disability by destroying parts of cells that allow the brain to function normally. While PSP has underlying biological similarities to Alzheimer’s disease, a disease which primarily affects memory, PSP impacts a person’s physical movement and bodily functions. PSP leads to progressive decline in patients — there is no known cause or cure.

More than 80,000 healthcare workers and their communities from across the country and around the world joined together in the Medline Pink Glove Dance for breast cancer online video competition. After a hard-fought dance battle, the online votes are in and Medline is pleased to name Geisinger Health System, Danville, Pa., as the winner. As a result, $25,000 will be donated to their charity of choice, the American Cancer Society, providing free transportation for treatment to central Pennsylvania breast cancer patients in need. Additionally, Medline and participating hospitals will donate another $1 million to the National Breast Cancer Foundation and various local breast cancer charities nationwide. Three and a half years after beginning a clinical trial which demonstrated the first successful and sustained use of genetically engineered T cells to fight leukemia, a research team from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia will today announce the latest results of studies involving both adults and children with advanced blood cancers that have failed to respond to standard therapies. The findings from the first 59 patients who received this investigational, personalized cellular therapy, known as CTL019, will be presented during the American Society of Hematology’s Annual Meeting and Exposition in New Orleans.
