Otis Elevator Company, the United Technologies Corp. (NYSE:UTX) unit which powered cities skyward and moves passengers up and down structures as diverse as the Eiffel Tower, the Empire State Building and the Kremlin, celebrates its 160th anniversary with the promise to harness the power of the sun. Founder Elisha Otis sold his first elevator in 1853, after developing the safety brake designed so that, “if the rope breaks the platform cannot fall.” Over the past 100 years, Otis, a $12 billion unit of UTC, has provided elevators to eight of the ten World’s Tallest Buildings, including the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, and the Shanghai World Financial Center in China, as well as the iconic Empire State Building in New York City. What impact would an ice sheet have on a Swedish final repository for spent nuclear fuel? And how does a final repository affect the surroundings if the ground is constantly frozen? The answers to these questions can be found in Greenland. In Kangerlussuaq, in western Greenland, Swedish Nuclear Fuel and Waste Management Company, SKB, is participating in a major international research project that investigates how glacial meltwater flows through and under the ice sheet and forms groundwater that, in turn, would be able to affect the safety of the repository. The project is called the Greenland Analogue Project, GAP for short. To view Multimedia News Release, go to http://www.multivu.com/mnr/58701-swedish-nuclear-fuel-waste-management-SKB

Drivers of vehicles with good small overlap front ratings from the Insurance Institute from Highway Safety can expect to be protected well in a frontal crash involving the left corner of the vehicle. But how would the passengers sitting next to them fare in a right-side small overlap crash? A new study shows that good protection doesn’t always extend across the front seat. The Institute conducted 40 mph passenger-side small overlap tests on seven small SUVs with good driver-side small overlap ratings. Only one of the vehicles, the 2016 Hyundai Tucson, performed at a level corresponding to a good rating, and the others ran the gamut from poor to acceptable. The results have prompted IIHS to consider instituting a passenger-side rating as part of its TOP SAFETY PICK criteria. Children International, a leading humanitarian organization, is providing fuel-efficient Ecocina cookstoves that can save lives among poor families in rural Honduras. The stoves are also better for the environment because they reduce wood consumption and harmful pollutants – a great reason to celebrate on Earth Day. In stark contrast to modern kitchens where burners can be turned on and off at will, “kitchens” in rural areas of the developing world often consist of open flames inside highly flammable primitive homes.
