They’ve been dubbed the “Sandwich Generation”–middle-aged people caring for aging parents while still taking care of their own children. Pulled in many directions, these family jugglers are at risk for stress, depression and other health problems. Older adults are the fastest growing segment of the U.S. population; 10,000 people turn 65 every day. This will continue for nearly 20 years, and that means more and more people will find themselves aiding their aging parents. Throughout November, which is National Family Caregiver Month, BeSmartBeWell.com sheds light on the challenges of caregiving and the particular issues facing the Sandwich Generation. At BeSmartBeWell.com, siblings Chris and Ann share their story of juggling jobs, family and caring for elderly parents. Two high school girls from Pennsylvania swept the top honors in the prestigious Young Epidemiology Scholars (YES) Competition (www.collegeboard.com/yes), the nation's leading public health research competition for high school students. Their research on rising consumption of energy drinks among adolescents and underdiagnosed migraines in teenage girls puts a spotlight on little recognized health threats to today's teen population. The two juniors, Shoshanna Goldin of Allentown and Gazelle Zerafati of Villanova, each received a $50,000 college scholarship, the top award in the YES Competition, which distributes nearly $500,000 annually to America's most promising young public health scholars. Maybe parents don’t know their teens as well as they think. According to a new 30 Hour Famine study, less than one in ten parents of teens (9%) describe teenagers today as “generous”. More than half of parents (58%) describe teenagers as “lazy”, and almost as many (54%) describe teens as “selfish”. And yet more than half of those teens themselves (53%) say the current economic climate has made them more aware of the needs of others. And almost nine out of ten (89%) of teens in the same online survey, conducted by Harris Interactive in January, say they wish they could do more to help those in need.
