Tree Fu Tom, the animated preschool series that’s taken Britain by storm, will make its U.S. debut on Sprout®, the 24-hour preschool channel, on April 22 at 11:00 a.m. EST. The show, which is a co-production between FremantleMedia Kids & Family Entertainment and CBeebies, joins Sprout’s lineup of quality children’s entertainment that includes both acquired and original programming including the network’s newest hit, “The Chica Show.”
The premiere of Tree Fu Tom kicks-off a week-long celebration called “Dig Into Earth Day,” which promotes conservation and the importance of caring for the environment. Hands-free technologies might make it easier for motorists to text, talk on the phone, or even use Facebook while they drive, but new findings from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety show dangerous mental distractions exist even when drivers keep their hands on the wheel and their eyes on the road. The research found that as mental workload and distractions increase reaction time slows, brain function is compromised, drivers scan the road less and miss visual cues, potentially resulting in drivers not seeing items right in front of them including stop signs and pedestrians. This is the most comprehensive study of its kind to look at the mental distraction of drivers and arms AAA with evidence to appeal to the public to not use these voice-to-text features while their vehicle is in motion.

Modern semitrailers for the most part do a good job of keeping passenger vehicles from sliding underneath them, greatly increasing the chances of surviving a crash into the back of a large truck, recent tests by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) show. But in crashes involving only a small portion of the truck’s rear, most trailers fail to prevent potentially deadly underride.
Earlier research showed that the minimum strength and dimensions required for underride guards are inadequate, prompting the Institute to petition the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in 2011 for tougher standards. The Institute also asked the agency to consider applying the standards to other types of large trucks, such as dump trucks that aren’t required to have any underride guards.
