The Island of Bantayan in Northern Cebu in the Philippines watched their country’s boxing hero Manny Pacquiao fight against Floyd Mayweather, Jr. during a live public screening on the island, which brought boundless inspiration to many who were still recovering from the effects of Typhoon Haiyan which struck the Philippines in late 2013. The public screening on the island was made possible with the effort of a large British life insurance company operating in the country in its bid to bring inspiration to the typhoon survivors. The screening was for the first time held simultaneously in Santa Fe, Bantayan and Madridejos municipalities on Bantayan Island. For negotiators at the Paris climate conference (COP21) to successfully advance global efforts to reduce carbon emissions, nations must embrace a prominent role for nuclear energy. The Obama administration highlighted the crucial role of nuclear energy when it convened a White House Summit on Nuclear Energy earlier this month. “As America leads the global transition to a low-carbon economy, the continued development of new and advanced nuclear technologies along with support for currently operating nuclear power plants is an important component of our clean energy strategy,” a White House fact sheet developed for the summit states. Many environmentalists are also giving nuclear energy a second look, as they seek practical solutions to constrain carbon emissions. Nuclear energy facilities provide 63 percent of America’s zero-carbon electricity. Globally, nuclear power plants provide one-third of all zero-carbon electricity. One of nuclear energy’s major advantages relative to other low-carbon energy sources is its unique ability to produce large-scale electricity around-the-clock in extreme weather conditions. Nuclear energy facilities don’t rely on the wind blowing, the sun shining, or just-in-time deliveries of fuel by truck, barge, rail or pipeline. In 2014, the U.S. nuclear energy industry’s average capacity factor—a common measure of efficiency and reliability—was 92 percent. The Alfred Mann Foundation (AMF) today announced the first subject, a U.S. Marine, SSgt James Sides, as a recipient of its highly anticipated IMES System (implantable myoelectric sensor) – an experimental system that holds the promise of being the first minimally invasive, intuitive, multi-channel control system for prosthetics intended for long term use. The IMES System is currently being studied under the Investigational Device Exemption (IDE) regulations of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). AMF’s ongoing trial with injured veterans at the Walter Reed National Medical Military Center anticipates subjects intuitively operating three different prosthetic movements simultaneously: opening and closing the hand, rotating the wrist, and moving the thumb. Combining these three movements enables several grasps that are invaluable for performing everyday tasks. The ImplantCenter has recently opened the brand-new operating room suited for more complex treatments. This comes alongside numerous additions such as the launch of the four cosy apartments to rest after treatments at the clinic and an implant education facility to expand their services further. These expansions are part of constant improvements that have been occurring for the last 15 years, alongside high quality service. The area of the clinic has increased by ten-fold to approximately 1800 m2 during the years. Moreover, the oral surgery division was opened in 2015, so eight dental treatment rooms and four oral surgery rooms are now in place today. All of the surgery rooms can serve ambulatory oral surgery treatments. The ImplantCenter is unique in Hungarian private dentistry because they can implement more complex treatments in the framework of one-day oral surgery procedure. This is due to the big and fully equipped operating room opened in November 2017. As part of the service, the ImplantCenter offers one and two-bed private rooms with medical supervision to their patients after each surgery. A Firefly is lighting up operating rooms, making it easier for robotic surgeons to remove tumors. However, this Firefly is not the type that children catch in a jar during warm summer evenings. Instead, it’s a technology that uses a wavelength of light not visible to the human eye. A special dye is then injected which causes a bright green fluorescence of certain tissues, hence the name “Firefly.” This green glow lets surgeons clearly see the difference between cancerous and healthy tissue when performing surgery, allowing them to remove the tumor while saving the rest of the healthy organ. XCMG, the world’s fifth largest construction equipment company, unveils the XE15R hydraulic intelligent excavator, its first fully remote-controlled excavator, signaling a new phase in XCMG’s intelligentization of its excavator series. Without a cab, XE15R is the company’s smallest excavator at 1.35m in height and 1.08m in width. Nicknamed “Little Swan”, the machine is agile and flexible in challenging working conditions. The newly developed XE15R features a wireless control function with a 100-meter range, and integrates mechanic, electronic and hydraulic control technology with a CAN bus interface design. Unmanned driving reduces labor intensity, particularly useful in severe operating environments, such as toxic conditions or extreme temperatures. As an intelligent excavator, XE15R also features a self-learning function. It can save operating maneuvers and then replay them automatically on request, a breakthrough that further ensures security, agility and reliability in operation. “Intelligentization is an inevitable choice as XCMG follows the path of new industrialization, and XE15R shows that we do what we say. Its design embodies our pursuit of efficiency and user friendliness.” said Wang Min, president of XCMG. The launching of XE15R expands XCMG’s product line, and improves its customers’ construction quality, providing them with a more human-friendly working environment and better project solutions. Five international apprentices visited global construction and mining equipment manufacturer XCMG's headquarters in Xuzhou, China for a one-week immersive XCMG Apprentice Program from January 18 to 24. The program was the company's first time bringing global apprentices to China; five apprentices from the United States, Brazil, Russia, Kenya and Pakistan stood out from a global selection. The participants came from different backgrounds but shared the same interest towards the construction and machinery industry. In addition to the comprehensive tour led by XCMG employees that included visits to the crane assembly factory and Asia's largest vibration and noise lab, as well as engaging activities like operating excavators, the apprentices also acted as their mentors' assistants, learning about the state-of-the-art technologies in construction machineries through a day's work. "XCMG has a keen focus on cultivating talents and encouraging communication through educational programs like XCMG Apprentice, which has introduced XCMG's technological and innovational achievements to the international community," said Wang Min, chairman and president of XCMG. In California where over one-third of the country’s vegetables and two-thirds of the country’s fruits and nuts are grown, businesses in the agricultural industry are looking for ways to reduce costs while continuing to deliver high quality products. In one of the nation’s sunniest states, farmers, food processers, beverage suppliers and more have used complete solar solutions from SunPower (NASDAQ:SPWR) to save on one of their largest operating expenses: electricity. One grower-owned almond processor based in the 7-square-mile town of Buttonwillow, Calif., now offsets 90 percent of its electricity costs with a 1-megawatt SunPower® Helix™ system. Golden Empire Shelling can see up to 70 million pounds of almonds roll through its state-of-the-art facility each year. With limited land and water resources in the area, the company chose a solar solution that delivers 29 percent more energy per square foot compared to conventional systems, and can be robotically cleaned with 75 percent less water than manual methods.
