St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital patients who completed kindergarten during their treatment for pediatric cancers celebrated at a graduation ceremony.
For the 10th straight year, St. Jude honored 14 patients from around the United States who completed kindergarten while battling life-threatening illnesses like leukemia and brain tumors. Dozens of families and St. Jude doctors, nurses, and staff cheered for the young students, who completed kindergarten in the St. Jude School Program by Chili’s.
Each year, the school program commemorates students who have completed kindergarten coursework with a special ceremony. The children present a song for the families and St. Jude staff, receive their diplomas and celebrate the milestone with their fellow students.

Service members and their families stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, one of the largest training bases for the U.S. Army, received a special visit on May 3 from The First Lady, Dr. Biden and Astronaut Mark Kelly. They were joined by lifelong literacy advocate LeVar Burton, the host of Reading Rainbow®, for a story time event for students on-base at Thayer Elementary School. The event was part of the White House’s Joining Forces initiative. Celebrating its 5th anniversary, the initiative works to ensure that service members, veterans, and their families have the tools they need to succeed throughout their lives.
Burton, whose father was in the army and mother an English teacher said of the event, “I was truly honored to be asked to join the First Lady, Dr. Biden and Captain Kelly for the book reading to children of military families. I know from personal experience the sacrifices they and their families make every day on behalf of our nation.” Burton also added that the event was especially important as it focused on reading. “Literacy is the gateway to children reaching their full potential as human beings.”

This holiday season will be particularly special for more than 1,000 families, many of whom will - for the first time - be able to create memories in their own homes. Throughout 2016, longtime partners Lowe’s and Habitat for Humanity have worked toward a yearlong goal to build or repair 1,000 homes alongside families across the U.S. to help them realize their dreams of safe, affordable homeownership.
At a culminating event in Fort Worth, Habitat and Lowe’s will revitalize 58 homes and string holiday lighting with 19 families, while celebrating surpassing that goal and bringing the joy of experiencing holiday traditions in the comfort of their homes to families in more than 300 communities nationwide.

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital® will celebrate its 14th annual FedEx/St. Jude Angels and Stars Gala, by welcoming back model and television personality, as well as co-founder, Daisy Fuentes, for an evening of fine dining and Latin music at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 14, at the Intercontinental Hotel in downtown Miami. The annual event raises funds to help ensure families never receive a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing or food – because all a family should worry about is helping their child live.
Cuban-born American journalist and one of Time magazine’s “25 Most Influential Hispanics in America,” Cristina Saralegui, will be recognized for her commitment to giving back and educating the Hispanic community. “Being recognized by St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is a true honor. For the next six weeks, America’s PrepareAthon! and other preparedness partners will focus on various hazards and provide simple actions that people and communities should take to prepare for each particular hazard.
This first week highlights floods. Individuals, communities, businesses, schools, and houses of worship around the country are holding preparedness discussions, conducting drills, and taking easy steps to prepare for floods and other disasters.
America’s PrepareAthon!℠ is a grassroots, community-based campaign for action to get families, organizations, and entire communities better prepared for floods and other emergencies.
According to the National Weather Service, flooding, which can occur anywhere in America, proved to be the most costly hazard in 2015, exceeding $2.7 billion in damages.

Fight for the hungry, fight for the homeless and fight for the hopeless. Newly appointed Commissioner David Hudson, National Commander of The Salvation Army, has issued a call for action as the holiday season approaches. As one of the largest nonprofit organizations in the country, with a presence in every ZIP code and a structure akin to the military, The Salvation Army is asking supporters to join the Fight for Good, the official theme of the 2017 Red Kettle Campaign.
“With the holiday season on the horizon, now more than ever we see the challenges of those faced with hardship,” said Commissioner Hudson. “There are families who don’t know where their next meal will come from, parents choosing between Christmas presents and the utility bill, and the recent natural disasters have displaced hundreds of thousands of people who don’t know where they will have a warm bed, if at all. It is more important than ever that we lift others up during the holidays.”

Buckle Up for Life is a national education program, created in 2004 by Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center and Toyota, to save children's lives. Over the last ten years, it has grown to include a network of more than a dozen of the nation's leading children's hospitals and has educated more than 17,000 people about the proper use of car seats and seat belts. Toyota's sponsorship has provided funding for over 40,000 car seats for families in need.
