PSI, a leading international health organization with programs in 67 countries, launches the latest issue of its global health magazine Impact, which answers the question: What is the future of international development? Fifty years ago, President John F. Kennedy created the U.S. Agency of International Development (USAID) to address Americans’ increasing dissatisfaction with foreign aid. Today the U.S. spends less than 1% of its total budget on foreign aid. How will sweeping new USAID reforms enable the Agency to make the most of taxpayer money? And how are international organizations approaching development on the ground? To view Multimedia News Release, go to http://multivu.prnewswire.com/mnr/psi/47715/

New data revealed that nearly 100 percent (99%) of 200 U.S. primary care physicians surveyed agree that heart disease and stroke are the number one cause of death and disability among type 2 diabetes patients; however, almost 40 percent (36%) of these physicians underestimate the number of patients who die from cardiovascular disease. Furthermore, while people with diabetes are two to four times more likely to have heart disease than people without diabetes, the survey, conducted by Harris Interactive and supported by Merck, found only one out of five (21%) patients (n=664) listed heart attack or heart failure as their biggest worry regarding diabetes complications, and even fewer patients (7%) listed stroke. According to research released today by Chase Card Services, a division of JPMorgan Chase & Co. [NYSE: JPM], 2012 is shaping up to be the year of “do-it-yourself” among American consumers. From travel to fitness to managing money, the What’s on Your Slate? poll from Chase SlateSM with Blueprint® reveals that people are taking steps to achieve their goals – and have fun – on their own terms this year. For example, 46 percent will exercise at home or outdoors instead of at a gym or health club, and 59 percent will pamper themselves at home rather than making visits to a spa or salon. For this year’s World Osteoporosis Day (October 20), the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) is releasing a 24-page report promoting a three-step strategy for healthy bones and strong muscles. Professor Heike Bischoff-Ferrari, director Centre on Aging and Mobility at the University of Zurich/Waid City Hospital and author of the report, stated, “Put simply, no matter how old you are you can optimize your bone health by following three essential steps.” “First, you must ensure sufficient vitamin D intake.
