For six weeks this spring, America’s PrepareAthon! and other preparedness partners will focus on different hazards and provide simple actions that people and communities should take to prepare for each particular hazard.
This sixth week highlights extreme heat. Individuals, communities, businesses, schools, and houses of worship around the country are holding preparedness discussions, conducting drills, and taking specific steps to prepare for extreme heat.
America’s PrepareAthon!SM is a grassroots, community-based campaign for action to get families, organizations, and entire communities better prepared for extreme heat and other emergencies.

Black History Month is a time when all Americans honor the rich African American culture in our society. It was Carter G. Woodson, an African American historian, who began a weeklong celebration, called Negro History Week, in 1926 as a way to honor Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln. One of the best ways to celebrate is by reading books by and about African Americans. Virginia Hamilton’s works are among the many books that call upon readers to think about slavery, freedom, and heritage. Through her stories, Hamilton began the genre of liberation literature, which serves to instill cultural pride, as well as a sense of family and the importance of relationships. Halloween Wars returns to Food Network for its fourth season, premiering Sunday, October 5th at 9pm ET/PT. National Dog Bite Prevention Week®, led by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), is May 17-23, 2015. State Farm and other members of the National Dog Bite Prevention Coalition have joined forces to educate adults and children about ways to reduce dog-related injuries. While an overwhelming majority of interactions with dogs don’t result in injury, most dog bites to children could be prevented.

Automakers from around the globe are gearing up for the grand opening of the 2017 Chicago Auto Show, which opens to the public on 10am. Saturday, Feb. 11, at McCormick Place.

Just like people, dogs have their good days and bad days but for the 4.7 million dog bite victims each year, a dogs’ bad day can result in serious injury or even death. In 2012, State Farm® had 3,670 dog bite claims and paid more than $108 million as a result of dog bites. This is a slight decrease compared to the number of dog bite claims in 2011 (3,750 claims) and a slight decrease in the amount paid as a result of dog bite claims in 2011 ($109 million).
