Eli Lilly and Company (NYSE: LLY) will commemorate its 140th anniversary today with activities at Lilly locations worldwide, including a ceremony to unveil a statue dedicated to founder Colonel Eli Lilly at global headquarters in Indianapolis.
Over 14 decades, the organization has contributed more than 100 medicines and significant medical advances, such as the first commercially available insulin, manufacturing and global distribution of the Salk polio vaccine and mental health breakthroughs such as anti-depressant Prozac® (fluoxetine). Today Lilly continues to progress its most robust pipeline in history with dozens of potential new medicines in mid- to late-stage development for cancer, diabetes, autoimmune disease, pain and Alzheimer’s disease.
“As Lilly celebrates 140 years, we’re keeping the vision of our founder alive – from our dedication in the lab to our impact in the community,” said John C. Lechleiter, Ph.D., Lilly chairman, president and chief executive officer, who began his career at Lilly as a chemist in 1979. “Colonel Eli Lilly started this company to put science to work fighting disease and encouraged his successors to ‘take what you find here and make it better and better.’ That vision pushes us daily to honor Colonel Lilly’s legacy and continue in our quest to discover new medicines to help make life better.”

New York Yankees all-time great Bernie Williams is teaming up with Boehringer Ingelheim to raise awareness of a lung disease called idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) that his father suffered from for years before he passed away in 2001. His father, Bernabé, inspired Williams to play baseball and make it to the Major Leagues, and taught him to play guitar which has become William’s second career since retiring from baseball.
In honor of his father’s battle with IPF, Williams has joined the Breathless™ campaign to turn his family’s devastating experience with this rare lung disease into a chance to help other families. Williams hopes to educate and empower others who think they may have IPF to seek early diagnosis and treatment and is encouraging people to visit the campaign website – www.BreathlessIPF.com – and share the videos and educational content through social media channels such as Facebook and Twitter.

In honor of World Pancreatic Cancer Day on Nov. 16, people around the world will come together to Demand Better in the fight against the world’s toughest cancer, starting with earlier diagnosis. The annual one-day campaign is an initiative of the World Pancreatic Cancer Coalition, which is comprised of more than 60 organizations from 27 countries on six continents.
Every day, more than 1,000 people worldwide will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Of that, an estimated 985 will die from the disease. Additionally, pancreatic cancer has the lowest survival rate among all major cancers, and in nearly every country, it is the only major cancer with a single-digit five-year survival rate (2-9 percent). These stunning figures are not merely statistics, they represent family members, friends and colleagues on every corner of the globe.
“This year, we are turning World Pancreatic Cancer Day from a day of awareness to a day of action,” said Julie Fleshman, JD, MBA, World Pancreatic Cancer Coalition chair. “As we expand our global movement to end pancreatic cancer, we are demanding better for pancreatic cancer patients now and in the future.”

When the designers for the Scion C-HR Concept began their research, they were told by young urban creative customers, “Polarizing is ok. Boring is not.” That sentiment was evident today as the Scion C-HR Concept had its World Debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show.
With an iconic design that also incorporates functionality and sporty performance, the Scion C-HR Concept is much like Scion’s customer in that it strives to stand out from the crowd.
“Scion is known for doing things differently, and maybe even being a little weird,” said Scion Vice President Andrew Gilleland. “This C-HR Concept embraces that idea and wears it like a badge of honor. We couldn’t be more excited to add the production version to our line-up.”
The C-HR Concept is named for its Compact size and High Ride height. With four doors and a hatch for supreme functionality, it’s the perfect vehicle for “yuccies,” the young urban creatives who inspired the design.
