Lake Research Partners and Bellwether Research and Consulting recently released a new national poll sponsored by the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) that finds likely 2016 voters have widespread and serious concerns about ethanol’s unintended consequences—including damage to engines, land conversion and food prices. “Voters across party lines express grave concerns for the impacts of the corn ethanol mandate from the Renewable Fuel Standard that touch many parts of their lives from the cars they drive to the food they buy,” said Celinda Lake, president of Lake Research Partners. “They strongly support bi-partisan proposals that would reduce the impact of corn ethanol, and particularly support the Environmental Protection Agency reducing the amount of corn ethanol required by law.” As the EPA recently closed the comment period on its proposed ethanol volumes for 2014, 2015 and 2016, the poll also shows that 67 percent of people favor the agency setting ethanol volumes below what is required by law, with 68 percent of Democrats and 71 percent of Republicans supporting volumes lower than the statute. Recognizing an opportunity to create a better world through innovative energy solutions, ENGIE Resources, the third-largest non-residential electricity provider in the United States, has unveiled a new program designed to put more power where it belongs – in the hands of customers. Called the “Energy Revolution,” the effort seeks to shift the emphasis away from providers’ traditional role, which has been to help customers manage price risk alone, and toward helping customers manage both price and quantity – how much they use, when they use it, and what they pay. The world is requiring more renewable sources of energy to meet its needs. With decades of expertise in feedstock, bioprocessing and biofuel production, DuPont has answered the call with a fully integrated process that converts biomass to cellulosic ethanol. Based on data provided by the California Solar Initiative (CSI), sales of new production homes with rooftop solar power systems nearly doubled from 2011 to 2012, signaling increasing home buyer demand to control monthly electricity costs using clean, renewable solar power. An estimated 4,000 new production solar homes were built in California last year, ten times the number built just seven years ago during the housing construction boom. SunPower estimates that strong growth in the sector will continue, with more than 20 percent of new production homes being solar powered this year. To celebrate the 116th anniversary of the invention of modern air conditioning, Carrier is donating dozens of heating and cooling systems to Habitat for Humanity’s annual Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project, including systems that support net zero energy. For the first time, four Habitat homes of St. Joseph County will achieve this distinction, meaning they will produce as much renewable energy as they consume over the course of a year. Carrier, a world leader in high-technology heating, air-conditioning and refrigeration solutions, is a part of UTC Climate, Controls & Security, a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX). Net zero energy home construction is a bold departure from conventional homebuilding. Constructed to be air-tight, the homes are well-insulated, energy efficient, carbon emission-free, and they result in a net zero energy bill. High efficiency climate controls systems are essential in achieving a net zero home. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the typical American home spends approximately 43 percent of their energy bills on heating and cooling.
